Feeding the kittens again

I think I made the right judgment call in feeding the kittens.

Maybe Samantha does not have enough milk. Maybe. I don’t really know. She’s already on quality food, but sometimes, even with humans, a mother may not have enough milk or any milk at all. It happens.

I just now I heard Akira shrieking loudly, even from downstairs. I rushed up to find her stuck between the cardboard box and Samantha herself. Sam didn’t even move at all. I had to grab Akira and free her.

I don’t know why Akira keeps wandering off. Is she off to search for milk? It reminds me of Cow Mau going off to ask us to feed them when they were mere kittens. Cow Mau always did that. Is Akira doing the same for her brothers and herself? I really don’t know.

Regarding feeding, I will use the 12 hourly weights to guide me.

At 6pm, I fed Akira and she drank voraciously. 2ml of milk. When we feed, it is so important never to overfeed as that can cause diarrhoea and it can be fatal. My senior vet last time told me that it is better to underfeed than to overfeed. So I’m underfeeding, especially since I presume they are getting a little milk from Samantha too. Just not enough. I also remember my senior vet telling me to feed about 2ml each time. I hope that’s correct. But this is different from handfeeding orphaned newborns. I’m just supplementing to ensure the daily weight gain meet the minimum requirement. So I’ll check in every 3-4 hours. Not every 2 hours as in orphaned kittens.

Indra drank 2ml as well. Indra only gained 10g in the last 24 hours, so that’s really not enough. Our vet said the weight gain should be between 10g and 15g per day, but a university website said 14g per day. I hope Indra can attain this tomorrow.

Kai did not want any milk from me. His weight gain is fine. It is also as though Samantha knew because when I picked up Kai, she bit me. Kai seems to be getting enough milk. It’s Indra who doesn’t get enough. Akira…is just hungry, I think.

This is the first time I see Samantha grooming the kittens. I hope her motherly instincts will kick in quickly. The kittens need her to care for them. There are some things that no human can do or duplicate.
