My friend from Spore Community Cats sent a very good Q&A; on neutering from the religious point of view. If you are interested, please click on CNRM in the labels and read the comments.
One of the points raised which I think I should highlight is this: Some people are still fearful of the moral repercussions of tampering with Nature by getting animals neutered.
Which animal wants to be neutered?
There’s a good point there. Yes, no animal wishes to be neutered, especially the males. So we who practise CNRM are tampering with Nature and doing something against the animals’ wishes. That much, I certainly will not argue.
But…here’s the “but”. Think of the alternatives that we have. If we do not get them neutered, then what happens?
They start to breed in an uncontrolled manner (4 litters a year, and it goes on an exponential increase). Assuming their young can survive on the street, assuming that living the life of a stray isn’t so bad after all (remember, only we think it’s suffering, but they might enjoy digging dustbins and sleeping in drains), we still have the problem of the authorities capturing and killing them whenever people complain.
So, between getting neutered and getting killed, which do you think the cat would prefer? Surely being neutered is the lesser evil, isn’t it? And mind you, the methods the authorities use to kill…are not exactly “humane”. As far as I know, how can there be any “humane” method of killing perfectly healthy and happy animals?
So, for those who are still worried about the moral repercussions of getting animals neutered (and there are quite a few, based on my encounters with people), let’s change our mindset, shall we?
Think of how much good you are doing by getting the stray animals neutered. You are preventing them from being killed in totally merciless ways.
How can there be anything morally wrong with that?
