Perky was one of our rescued dogs from the Klang Dog Pound way back in December 2009. That was the time when we could still actively do rescue work because we had a place to send the animals to (unfortunately, most of the sanctuaries are full now and that is why we cannot do rescue work anymore).
Perky is one of our happiest success stories.
After she was rescued, we got our vet over to the sanctuary in Bentong to do mass spaying for all the females. Perky was spayed and after the vet left for KL, she started bleeding. I panicked and called the vet, and he told me to just apply pressure on the wound. The bleeding stopped but that experience really frightened me. If anything had gone wrong, there was really no vet within miles from the sanctuary.
The next day, Perky was found to be incredibly weak. We sent her back from Bentong to PAWS. PAWS had so generously offered us temporary shelter for a few sickly dogs who needed medical treatment. When Perky reached PAWS, I was still in Bentong. The manager called me and told me Perky was in really bad shape and I remember what he said to me: “That small dog might not even be alive when you reach here, she’s in very bad shape. Please be prepared for the worst.”
I prayed.
REAL hard.
The next few days, we went to see Perky every day and fed her. Though she was weak, she was as perky as ever. Always happy and cheerful. That’s how I named her “Perky”.
Perky was treated for various diseases at our panel vet after that, including tick fever. After she was fit enough, she was spayed and ready for adoption.
Mei Ling had been following the daily updates of our Klang Dog Pound Rescue Operation, and she said she wanted to do her part in helping. So she decided to adopt Perky. We asked Mei Ling if she could take Sweetie as well. Mei Ling agreed, but later, found that she could not cope, so Sweetie was returned to us (Sweetie is now rehomed on a farm and doing well).
Ever since living with Mei Ling, Perky has been thriving!
