Today, we sponsored the spaying-neutering of 3 cats rescued and looked after by Mr and Mrs Yuen from Cheras.
Agnes helped with the logistics and this is what Agnes found out about the noble work that Mr and Mrs Yuen do:
Mr Yuen and his wife are taking care of the cats and dogs abandoned at a Chinese temple in Cheras, near the badminton hall. They spend their own money, time and effort going to the temple everyday to feed the dogs, clean, etc. leaving their 2 young children at home. The temple devotees were made to understand that they can ‘release’ animals at the temple and so Mr and Mrs Yuen have a hard time coping with the increasing numbers with no help from the temple management, financial or otherwise. Many puppies have died of distemper. The Yuens are now considering vaccination for the remaining ones and trying to find ways and means to handle this. They take the cats home to their flat to look after.

A note on the Chinese cultural practice of “releasing animals”:
While it is good to “release” animals instead of having them killed, this must be done with wisdom. Releasing animals is a Chinese cultural practice aimed at saving lives or giving the animal a better life than what it used to have. Abandoning one’s own pet is thus not an act of “releasing animals”.
In this day and age when we have a better understanding of the eco-system, it is much better to get the animals spayed-neutered and returned to its orginal colony than to simply release them in an unfamiliar place.
