After we blogged about subsidising Nujtiya Chareansouk for the spaying of 2 street dogs that her mum, Mdm Lim Tiang Seouk, takes care of, we communicated and learnt more about what her mum does:

Mdm Lim Tiang Seouk is 67 years old and resides in Kangar. Her income is from collecting recyclable materials. She has 3 dogs at home and feeds 7 dogs and 2 cats in her neighbourhood. She also feeds 20 stray dogs and cats in Kangar town. These dogs and cats are located at the shoplots near a coffee shop she used to work at and there are also dogs who wait for her daily located at an unoccupied piece of land. She can only feed them at night to avoid being chided by those who are unsympathetic towards her cause. Apart from looking after these dogs and cats, Mdm Lim also takes care of one of her daughters who is seriously ill and the daughter’s child.

After highlighting her work to one of our donors, Angel Inc, Angel and her doggie friends have now offered to sponsor the balance of the RM590 bill for the spaying of the two female dogs. We had already paid out our subsidy of RM200 earlier and now Angel Inc has contributed another RM390 to top up the balance. The money has already been banked into Mdm Lim’s account yesterday. In addition to our RM100 subsidy per animal, Angel Inc will also be topping up all of Mdm Lim’s bills in neutering the dogs and cats.

We are also now offering Mdm Lim our food subsidy after we found out her financial background and how she has been looking after street dogs and cats for over 20 years. Our contact in Perlis has confirmed this.

More from her daughter:

Mum has been feeding stray dogs & cats more than 20 years. Everyday she will buys the “chicken head” from market & cook for the strays. She also buys fish, rice, etc from market & cook for the strays or sometimes dog food from pet shop.

According to her, she pays (only the “chicken heads”) RM 80/month and sometimes fish, rice, dog food, etc (probably less than RM 50/month).

Before feeding the strays, she will remove the harder part / bone to avoid any leftover at the feeding place.

She will feed the dogs nightly instead of day time so that she won’t get scolded by the passerby or caught by town coucil.

If she saw puppies, she will bring them back & raise for few months then release them to the same place she found them. She can’t keep them in her house area as the residents there ever complaint and report to town council to catch the dogs as they said they worried about their safety.

Just recently, we decided to bring the dogs for neutering as she notice the number of stray dogs seem like increasing. She told me she can’t afford to feed so many dogs due to her age and health condition.

We discussed the possibility of getting the dogs neutered.

Actually my mum told me that she has no confident to do or commit she can do the best to the dogs due to her age, health condition (knee/ body pain and she has low blood as well). There is no one who can help her and she has really no idea and no strength to do it by herself, let alone catching or carrying the dogs. Besides, my 3rd sis’s condition is quite serious, my mum has to take care of her kid somemore …
What we can start from is maybe my mum & I will target on the female dogs at the coffee shop which my mum always feed to send for neutering first as they are more friendly. But only when I take leave & return to Perlis, we will do it together.
I believe you know better than us it’s not easy to “persuade” a dog to come near to us ‘cos sometimes you need tactics and play with them always to win their trust to you. To be frank, I really don’t want my mum got bitten or anything happen to her even though I really understand that dogs breed very fast and can’t wait for me actually …
Perlis is a small town and the people here pay less attention to the animals. Her neighbours complaining, threathening; Outsider scolding when they saw my mum feeding dogs and cats, etc. They even say my mum crazy, why waste money, why waste time, why don’t help people but animals, etc … Even our very close relatives also against on what she is doing.
Hope you can understand that we are not trying to find excuses but this is the real situation that we face. We don’t want to take the money but end up letting you down. What we can do is try our best and see what else we can do. Anyway, my mum will still try to look around if anyone can help.

Of course we totally understand the predicament Mdm Lim is in, so we will help her with food subsidy and neutering sponsorship (thank you, Angel Inc) whenever Nujtiya goes back to Perlis and helps her mum take the dogs for neutering.

Nujtiya says her mum will not claim for the chicken and fish that she buys, but if Nujtiya goes back to Perlis, she will help her mother purchase dogfood which we will subsidise.

Here are some photos of Mdm Lim:

There are angels everywhere, like Mdm Lim, and many go unnoticed and do not receive help. We hope more of such individuals’ selfless service to the community animals can be highlighted so that they will receive the help that they rightly deserve. We have pledged to help Mdm Lim in her work with these animals. For starters, her bill of RM590 has been sponsored in full with the extra contribution from Angel Inc.

Street dogs and cats live a hard life out there, in any community. We know it is impossible for all of them to be adopted or rehomed to shelters and sanctuaries. Keeping many of them confined in rooms or cages can also be unhealthy and detrimental to their wellbeing. So we truly value and appreciate the work of animal-feeders who have taken upon themselves the task of feeding these animals and getting them neutered.
