We have subsidised RM103 for Walter’s treatment and RM100 for his neutering. Walter is a community cat in Dani Irwan’s neighbourhood.

Subject: Subsidy application for Walter
To: Kah <chankahyein@gmail.com>Hello Dr. Chan.
Today at just before 6PM, Walter came to my house for food. I haven’t seen him around for the past several days so seeing him again was good. However, he seemed a bit listless & weak, plus when I petted him his body felt hot to the touch. So, after he finished his meal, I quickly brought him to my local vet. It was a rush, as they are supposed to close at 7.30PM. Luckily, we got there at 6.45PM and the doctor was able to take a look at Walter.
A quick check with the thermometer confirms that he’s running a high fever of 40 degrees celsius. The doctor said that Walter has an infection somewhere which brought about the fever and also caused swelling of his right kidney. Walter is also severely dehydrated as when the doctor pulled on his skin, it is slow to return back. No wonder he looked so weak! The dehydaration might be caused by the swollen kidney, according to the doctor.
Walter was given an antibiotic injection & another injection for his fever & then put on a drip to rehydrate him quickly. He didn’t like the drip very much, so he was all fierce & even bit & scratched the doctor’s assistants. It took 3 persons to subdue him just now (please see attached photos). Poor Walter. He’s also found to have fleas so he will also be de-flead & de-wormed. The doctor wants to put Walter on observation so he’s currently hospitalized there for 3 days or until his fever & swelling of the kidney subsides. During this time, he will also be given a course of oral medication as well.
The total cost for Walter’s treatment just now came to RM226 (please see attached photo of receipt), details of which are as follows:
a) Consultation & examination – RM20
b) Deworming – RM6
c) Drip – RM35
d) Frontline spray – RM20 (not subsidised)
e) Injection, fever – RM15
f) Injection, antibiotic – RM15
g) Antibiotics, oral – RM16
h) Anti-swelling medication, oral – RM16
i) Virus medication, oral – RM15
j) Multivitamins – RM8
k) Hospitalization – RM60 (RM20x3 days)May I apply for a 50% medical subsidy of the above medical cost, Dr. Chan?
Furthermore, if in 3 day’s time Walter’s condition has improved a lot, we may decide to neuter him. I’ve put it on hold for long enough so this might be a good time to do it, depending on his condition, of course. The neutering cost for a male cat will be RM150. If that is the case, may I apply for the RM100 spaying/neutering subsidy as well?
Thank you for your attention to this matter, Dr. Chan.
Looking forward to hear from you soon,

To: Chan Kah Yein <chankahyein@gmail.com>Hello Dr Chan, thanks for your swift response.Ok, noted. De-fleaing cost of RM20 will not be covered. The plan to neuter Walter in 3 day’s time is subject to his condition and also the doctor’s advice. It is also due to the fact that once I’ve released him back to his territory, it is quite difficult for me to ‘trap’ him again, as he only comes to my house every once in a while and even then sometimes when I’m not at home or am too preoccupied with other things. But, I think you may be right in saying that 3 days is far too soon. Ok then, I think I’ll postpone Walter’s neutering to a later date.
No, Walter is no longer on drip. The doctor said it’s quite impossible for him to be put on an ‘proper’ IV line as he’s far too fierce. He was on drip for about 15 minutes only just now, during which he was rehydrated with fluids.
Yes, I’ve paid for the 3 days’ hospitalization. I know it may seem a bit hasty but I felt like I wanted to settle everything upfront just now, and the clinic’s staff didn’t seem to mind me paying the full amount in advance (of course). If this is a problem, then the RM60 hospitalization cost can be excluded from the subsidy amount if you wish. But seeing as to how Walter’s condition is quite serious this time, I think the hospitalization is justified.
Thank you for the form, Dr. Chan. And yes, I am NOT applying to any other organizations.
Kindly let me know which items have to be excluded from the subsidy application. I will then fill in the form accordingly.
Thank you.

To: Chan Kah Yein <chankahyein@gmail.com>Hello Dr. Chan,
Just wanted to let you know that I went to pick up Walter from the vet this morning, but since he’s in better condition the vet & I have decided to go ahead with his neutering. The vet said that it’s safe for us to do the procedure now, and there might not be a good time afterwards since he’s already there. The vet was also wanted to neuter Walter quickly because he’s FIV+, so she didn’t want it to spread. It might also lower his risk to other diseases once he’s released back to his environment later.
Walter’s fever has subsided and he’s eating, drinking, peeing & pooing normally. His right kidney is still swollen however, and the vet said it might be already damaged/inflamed. It’s good that his other kidney is still working, though. The vet is giving him lots of water, but it might be some time until his hydration level gets back to normal, especially considering his impaired kidney function.
Walter’s neutering will cost RM150, including 1 night free boarding after the surgery. The surgery will be done later today, perhaps.
Would it be alright for me to send the RM100 spaying subsidy form together with the other medical subsidy form? I’ll be sure to include both receipts.
Thank you,
– Dani Irwan –

To: Chan Kah Yein <chankahyein@gmail.com>Hello Dr. Chan. Here’s a latest photo of Walter, post-op. Sorry for the blurriness, my camera phone is acting up. And sorry I couldn’t get a photo of the op site, Walter is being fierce & uncooperative…but he’s doing ok & is recovering nicely, thank God.
