Here we go again…another female cat has been reopened for surgery because whoever got her spayed previously did not get her ear notched. The vet charged RM60 and we have sponsored in full. This sponsorship comes from the AnimalCare Donors (RM20) and Berjaya Cares (RM40).
This is the second female cat picked up by Susan in her area where the cat had already been spayed. Previously, there was also a dog case.

This being the case, we suspect someone else is doing TNR for these animals in this area but did not request the vet to get the animals’ ears notched.
We have advised Susan that she has the following option, to spare the poor female animal from being opened up and going under the risk of anaesthesia and the knife:
Keep the female cat confined for at least 2 weeks and see if she comes on heat. If she does not, she has probably been already spayed. I did this with Heidi, as advised by my vet when he strongly suspected that Heidi had already been previously spayed. For dogs, it may be harder.
The next case is that of Happy the Cat’s (Happy was also a previously spayed cat, reopened again (see link above)). This time Happy had some sores, but thankfully, it is not sporotrichosis. Happy’s bill is RM56 and we have subsidised RM28 for it. This subsidy comes from the AnimalCare Donors.

Subject: Notching the Ear- A Guideline for Rescuers
To: Chan Kah Yein <chankahyein@gmail.com>Dear Dr. Chan,The stray cat, named Seby had been spayed previously as the vet discovered when she performed the surgery. But her ear was not notched to indicate this.I feel really disheartened and afraid now to get hold of these strays , subject them to the trauma of surgery, the risk of anaesthesia and post surgery pain, and all for nothing .It is very upsetting.
A cat or a dog with a notched ear will help trappers/rescuers know that the animal has been neutered ,so that they dont take the same animal in again for surgery. Time and money is then not gone to waste.Rescuers assume that all cats and dogs have not been neutered yet because they dont have an ear notch. Please please remember to notch your strays and your pets as well just in case they go missing. The vet has kindly notched the cats ear and also charged half the rate for the procedure.
I have mailed the subsidy form together with the vets receipt. The Vets printer was out of order on that day so they have given me a hand written one duly stamped.
Attached are photos of Seby post surgery.Thank youkind regardssusan

Subject: Sporo Scare
To: Chan Kah Yein <chankahyein@gmail.com>Hi Dr. Chan,Happy, the black cat that was spayed in May had a sore on her inner left leg and one on her backside near the anus.
Assuming that it might be sporotrichosis, that she may have contracted from Houdini, I took her to the vet for a check.
After some lab tests and examination, happily it turned out to be a bacterial infection and not sporotrichosis.
She was put on some medication and she’s doing fine now.
I have mailed the necessary forms for Happy’s medical subsidy.
Thank you for your advice with regards to a female cat and what to look out for.
Attached are photos of Happy.
Thank you
kind regards
susan
