This has been a sad month with the shooting of Kopi in Besut. While Kopi’s case is indeed a very tragic and heart-wrenching one, this catching-and-killing of street animals has been going on for so, so long in our country, and so many innocent lives have been lost. The method is archaic, cruel and most unfair, and shouldn’t decades of doing it already prove that it doesn’t work?
This is a shared earth and animals have the right to live on the street. How we ended up having street animals is due to the actions of our forefathers who domesticated wolves and wildcats as companion animals. So in all fairness, we should take responsibility for their existence and with the benefit of knowledge, help them exist peacefully and harmoniously with us, not harm them. Why is this simple rationale so difficult to understand for the powers that be? Short of sounding like a broken tape recorder, all we can do is to continue doing what we know is right and compassionate and hope that one day, this understanding will penetrate into the larger community.
On a personal note, we have finally managed to secure Lizzie and send her to her forever home! It had taken us more than 2 months to do it so I do appreciate the efforts of so many dog caregivers who CNRM their many, many dogs on a daily basis. It’s been so long since we rescued a dog and Lizzie is a clear reminder that dogs are different from cats in that they are so much more trusting but also much bigger in size!
Happy Deepavali to all our Hindu friends!
