Farewell, Perky (rescued dog from Klang Pound, 15 years ago)

15 years ago, during our start-up gungho days, we did pound rescues.

Perky was one of the many dogs rescued from the Klang Pound when that pound decided to mass-euthanise the dogs. We managed to find a farm in Bentong which was willing to take all the dogs provided we supplied food every month.

All the dogs went to Bentong. We engaged a vet from the Klang Valley to do mass neutering there and Perky was neutered. We were there to do post-op care for all the dogs. But before we left, Perky suddenly started bleeding. The external sutures had ruptured. The vet had already left and was on his way back to the Klang Valley. I called and asked him what to do. He said to just press on the wound and the bleeding should stop…in time.

I could not leave Perky behind, so along with 3 other dogs who weren’t doing too well, Perky came back with us in the car, with me pressing on her bleeding wound all the way back from Bentong to Subang Jaya.

We reached very late at night and only PAWS offered a place for the 4 dogs. We were green and inexperienced at that time, so all 4 were housed at PAWS. PAWS said they weren’t sure if Perky would make it through the night.

First thing next morning, I was waiting at PAWS to see Perky. She definitely more than survived the night! She was as perky as ever, hence, I named her Perky. Every day I cooked food and visited our 4 dogs at PAWS while giving them the medical care they needed. Wendy had distemper, Shaun and Roger had something minor. Wendy eventually succumbed to distemper and we nursed her till the very end.

We advertised for adoption for the 3 dogs once they were ready, and my dear friend, Mei Leng chose to adopt Perky.

Perky had a most wonderful life with Mei Leng and her rabbits. Occasionally, Mei Leng would send me photos of Perky. I saw Perky grow up, with so much love and care.

A few days ago, Mei Leng sent me photos of Perky. Perky had passed away peacefully at the ripe old age of 15.

I was so sad, but this is life. I’m comforted that Perky had a second chance at life and was adopted by Mei Leng who loved her so, so much.

Mei Leng kept thanking me for having rescued Perky, which enabled her to adopt and care for Perky for 15 whole years during which Perky taught her so much.

The honour is mine, Mei Leng.

Because of Perky, Mei Leng started to get involved in helping street animals and is presently very active in a renowned shelter in the Klang Valley.

Perky had a friend, Bao Bao, a male dog. Bao Bao is also mourning now, but Mei Leng plans to adopt another dog to keep Bao Bao company and become his new companion.

I wish extend my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Mei Leng for having adopted Perky and given her such a wonderful life. I hope Bao Bao gets a new companion soon and whoever Mei Leng is going to adopt will be a very, very lucky dog!!

In sweetest memory of Perky:

Perky and Bao Bao
