Raw pet food and the H5N1 bird flu, especially in cats

This article is written by a Ph.D immunologist and microbiologist who works full-time in life sciences biotech and founded ImmunoLogic, a science communication and consulting organization, to help combat health disinformation.

I know that when it comes to raw food for pets, it is a very sensitive and controversial topic because there are those who totally believe that it is the most biologically-appropriate ancestral diet for cats and dogs. I used to as well, but I don’t anymore now because I cannot find reliable science-backed evidence to prove it.

One of the most admirable thing about science is to be able to say, “I’ve changed my mind now, based on new knowledge, findings or realisation” or “I was wrong before”. That is the difference between science and, well, religion, although this has nothing to do with religion at all. One allows questioning and change, the other absolutely forbids it.

So all I will say here is, let’s keep up with the latest research findings and knowledge from science, for the sake of our animals’ wellbeing.

This is happening in the United States. Let’s hope it doesn’t happen here.

Covid-19 was first detected in China, see how fast it spread to the rest of the world and how much untold suffering it brought.

Nobody wants a next pandemic. We already have enough problems and challenges as it is.

Some information about H5N1 in the region:

Malaysia has experienced four waves of H5N1 outbreak but no human deaths were recorded which is in 2004, 2006, 2007 and latest outbreak in 2017 at Kelantan.

The H5N1 virus which originated in Southern China has spread across 3 continents and is now endemic in many South East Asian countries, with far-reaching effects on public health and local economies. Vietnam and Indonesia have experienced the greatest number of H5N1 outbreaks in both poultry and humans.

Transmission of H5N1:

Raw poultry can transmit H5N1. While no human cases of H5N1 infection through eating properly cooked poultry have been reported, the virus can be transmitted through uncooked poultry and poultry products. Therefore, it’s crucial to avoid consuming raw poultry or food items containing raw poultry ingredients.
