A message from JoTong: Thank you so much to AnimalCare for the 22 bags of kibbles and 12 cartons of canned food for the Balakong stray dogs. My friends and even some passerby also commented that the dogs we are feeding do not look like stray dogs at all as they all look healthy and fat 😅. Tks to the nutritious kibbles that were sponsored by AnimalCare ❤️. With the food aid, we have surplus to buy vitamins for the dogs to ensure they are healthier.
Tong Yut Fun (JoTong) and Wong Woi Kan feed more than 150 street dogs in the Balakong area. Every dog that they can catch is neutered, most of them returned to colony (unless the dog has special needs) and managed for life with dedication and commitment. The younger puppies are rehomed, adult dogs with special needs are either rehomed or relocated to spaces which are safer for them and sick dogs are given medical treatment. Collectively, they have got 75 dogs neutered on their own and under our aid, 187 animals (mostly dogs and a few cats).
Recently, they got another 15 factory area dogs neutered and for these, JoTong managed to get the bosses of the factory to pay for the neutering while JoTong and Uncle Wong sponsored the boarding. It wasn’t easy, though. Here’s how JoTong did it, in her own words:
This time for the 15 dogs, I managed to get the factory owners to pay for the neutering fees while we pay for the boarding. Coz I told them they need to neuter their female dogs at least and proof to them that there are no longer puppies in our area. Initially these are the factories that won’t allow us to neuter their dogs. Until a stage they cannot tahan with too many puppies and no one wants to adopt them. Finally they agreed to neuter their female dogs.
I really took time to explain how the neutering works and ask them to look around carefully, they will see only old and matured dogs.
Have to have thick face as I keep talking to them until I knock on their office door and try to speak to the person whom jaga the dogs. Got times where I was told not to be busy body 😩 Karma on me and so on…..but I just reply yes, I know the karma.
When I saw their dog sick or have skin allergy or fighting wounds, I help to apply cream or give medicine, slowly they become more friendly and accept my suggestion to neuter the dogs. I told them I can do all the transport for them.
It takes a lot of patience, perseverance and hard work, plus, yes, “thick skin”! But it is worth it when it is done for the dogs’ wellbeing. Kudos to JoTong for her unrelenting tenacity and amazing efforts!
JoTong also got another 3 cats neutered in her neighbourhood, on her own. This makes it a total of 280 animals under their belt! Every street animals neutered is hundreds and thousands prevented from being born on the street.
Uncle Wong works as a mechanic while JoTong works as an admin executive in the human resource department at her workplace. JoTong and Uncle Wong use their own money to sustain their CNRM work; they don’t get any donations at all. Even though we help them with our neutering and medical aid in the past, they still needed to foot out a lot of their own money to care for the dogs. For example, while we reimbursed the neutering charges in full, there was still the boarding fees to cover for a minimum stay at the clinic until full recovery before the dogs can be returned to their original colony. Then, there is deticking with Nexgard which also is not cheap. And sometimes the dogs may have medical issues that require treatment and medication as well. These extras come out from their own pockets.
JoTong and Uncle Wong take turns to feed the dogs daily. They cook rice, sometimes Uncle Wong adds chicken parts he manages to salvage from eateries and this food is supplemented with economically-priced kibble. It is a daunting and very challenging task to feed more than 150 dogs every single day, rain or shine. Besides the expenses, there is the issue of time and energy too. With so many dogs to take care of, the dogs do have other medical issues as well, and JoTong feeds them vitamins and supplements to ensure they remain in reasonably good health. All these expenses are from herself.
We offer our food aid to this large colony of street dogs under JoTong and Uncle Wong’s care because of their exemplary CNRM work where the dogs are neutered, given veterinary care and good nutrition, rehomed where possible and the return-to-colony ones are managed for life with love. We hope the dogs will enjoy the premium kibble and canned food! According to JoTong, the dogs really like the food that we provide, and it can last for more than two weeks each month.
Here are some latest photos of JoTong and Uncle Wong with the dogs. They really go to extraordinary lengths to ensure every single dog is fed and no dog is left hungry. Every single day.
