Food subsidy for Kelly and Jacinta’s dog sanctuaries in Ipoh and Tanjong Rambutan

In July 2011, I highlighted the plight of Kelly Tan Juat Jong and Jacinta Victorine Emmanuel’s two dog sanctuaries in Ipoh and Tanjong Rambutan. These two ladies manage more than 100 dogs in their two shelters. Jacinta still works for a living, but Kelly does not. Kelly has also sold her house in order to raise the money to look after these dogs and maintain the shelters.

With the blog post and email blast, we raise some funds for them which were used for shelter maintenance and food:

The donations were banked in directly into Jacinta’s account.

I have not heard from Kelly or Jacinta since then until about a month ago when Kelly called me one morning. She said they need food subsidy for their dogs.

I know from my sources in Ipoh, that their dogs are spayed-neutered and vaccinated, and sick dogs are medically treated (which is our requirement to qualify for food subsidy). And of course, the caregiver needs to be “needy” as well.

For a start, we have made arrangements with a shop in Ipoh which supplies petfood, such that we will purchase the food directly and Kelly can collect the food from the shop by herself. That way, we save on transportation costs.

Kelly has asked for 6 bags of food. They need 2 bags of food per day for their 100+ dogs. They would also have to find their own sources of donations as we do not want any shelter to be reliant on any one individual or organisation for help. That’s likened to keeping all our eggs in one basket. What if that basket is not there anymore one day?

We have also advised Kelly not to keep picking up dogs from the street anymore as they already have more than they can handle. There is only a fine line between a responsible caregiver and a hoarder. When one does things and allows one’s emotions to take over, that line can be easily crossed and one might never realise it.

We do not provide food subsidies to hoarders.

Below are some photos taken last year of the shelter. Jacinta has promised to send new photos soon.

We will be updated by a friend on the condition of the dogs and what is required. Our help will be given in the areas of food and medical subsidies and spay-neuter subsidies (should there be dogs that are not neutered yet).

I will update with latest photos as soon as I receive any.

The 6 bags of food is given from our Food Fund.
