Introducing a new cat to the resident cat (from Ng Chen Chen)

Useful information from Ng Chen Chen:

I stumbled upon a YouTube video that tells the story of how a new kitten and an older cat who is already established in a household learn to become fast friends. I think this video would be able to teach us a lot about cats communication. Many adopters are hesitant or return a cat when their cat react violently towards the newcomer because humans don’t understand cat behaviour. Well, this video does a good job in showing that cats need some time to know each other and they communicate with a lot of fighting and chasing. As long as the cats are (1) not purposefully injuring the other cat – wounds, bleeding, etc; and (2) each cat is not packing its bag and moving out of the house, then they are indeed in the process of getting to know each other.

# 1 – the introduction and getting to know each other
# 2 – best of friends

This is an important topic for anyone who brings a new cat into a household! The trick, I think, is to take it slowly, isolating the newcomer if possible, and introducing him or her to the existing cats gradually. This is an article from Petfinder’s library which contains a lot of helpful tips for introducing a new cat into a household. (I didn’t write it but just compiled it from other members’ shared experiences.)

Since 1984 I have adopted many cats, at any one time I have around 10 cats sharing the house. And some time they come from different countries, SO literally they understand and speak different languages. But I just add them to the group and let them figure out how to get along.

Many people asked me .. do they get along with each other? Do they fight? My very simple answer to this question has always been — they fight, they figure out, they make friends, some remind always disliking one another. BUT are we, the human being, not doing just the same? We have good friends that we like each other from the moment we met, and there are some we just ‘hate on first sight’? SO, why can it not the animals do the same? Why should we think they should ALL get along? It is completely OK to fight. In fact it is healthy as long as they do not kill one another. And I always spank on the butt, or tick their noses if they get too aggressive. And they understand. And they learned.
