Dear Dr. Chan,
Would like to seek your advice concerning some abandoned dogs in Bayan Lepas, Penang. I live near Penang airport and a village close by has about 10-12 abandoned dogs. Villagers here have been evacuated for development and compensated with an apartment each. So their dogs were left behind by the owners. Since evacuation was phase by phase, the dogs had move to seek for food from the existing residents. I yesterday understood from one of the villagers that they have been given notice 1-2 months to evacuate. This means the dogs will have no shelter and nowhere to turn for food now. They consist of a pack of males, females, pregnant ones and 1 or two which have given birth. One female which gave birth to 6 litters recently was bitten by a cobra and the dog and litters died.
There are no shelters in Penang and SPCA in Penang practise euthanasia. SPCA seberang Perai is up to the brim with about 200 dogs and 50 cats and more surrenders taking place. I can’t take in any dogs anymore as i have a mini shelter of my own. Other shelters are far off in KL etc and they too are burdened with their local problems. Any idea?

if their shelter in relau is up and running, then they may be able to help… the state govt has leased a piece of state land to this group to set up a no-kill animal sanctuary in penang… Straydog
Apparently the shelter is not up yet, though initially it was expected to be up and running beginning of this year. In fact, everybody is waiting for the shelter to start kicking since last year but still no progress thus far though they are constantly having fund raising events. One is coming up in May, in fact…but so far, the land is still empty. Is PASS coming up soon? Beats me!
