Helping Qing Qing

Sometime before Chinese New Year, Catherina Tay from Melaka wrote to me asking for advice for a little kitten (now named Qing Qing) whom she had rescued from the street. 

Apparently, her local vet told her Qing Qing had some fractures that needed to be X-rayed but none of the vets in Melaka had an X-ray machine.  I told Catherina she could bring Qing Qing to either UPM, our panel vet or any of the vets in the Klang Valley that has X-ray facilities.

Here are some updates from Catherina today:

I have brought her to the vet in UPM on 8th Feb. She has multiple bone fractures i.e. on both of her legs.


I attached herewith her x-ray for your reference. From the x-ray, we can see that her pelvic bone has narrowed the path of her digestive system to her anus. And from the x-ray also, we can see the her colon was full of feces. Dr. Siti Sarismahanim was the one who has consulted her and Dr. Mellisa Phoon was the one who take care of her when she was in the ward. Dr has done enema to clear her colon when she was warded from 8th to 13th Feb. She has to be on wet/soft food diet as she will have constipation problem if her pelvic bone is not corrected. But Dr said chances to do it successfully is very slim. The cost for the procedure is around RM600-1500.


She has femoral head fracture on her right leg and fracture with protuded bone her left leg. Procedure to correct this is around RM 1200. I have brought her back since her discharge on 13th. She has finished all her antibiotics and medicine except for the lactulose for her constipation. She has difficulties to defecate even though i only feed her wet and soft food. This morning she vomitted 2x. I do not know what is happening. Maybe it is because the lactulose will cause her to have nausea.

And further updates:

Yes I have asked Dr. Siti and she told me that there will be no life threatening if the fractures are not corrected. BUT possible complications will be from the discharge summary 1. recurrence of constipation, 2. dystochia if pregnant (not an issue as I will get Qing Qing neutered if possible) and 3. hindlimb paresis and muscle atrophy.

FYI, from the discharge summary, the DIAGNOSES are: 1. Multiple pelvic fracture 2. Bilateral femoral fracture 3. Constipation

I have been giving Qing Qing lactulose 1ml twice a day for nearly a week. I noticed that she still having difficulty to defecate. And I checked online that long term on lactulose will cause nausea, agitation and etc.

If life threatening condition persist if the operation is not done, then i will think i will want to go ahead with the operation to correct the fractures.

Thank you for helping me ask your panel vet for a second opinion.  And about the cost, I would like to thank you so much on your offer.  I do not know how to repay you but I will try ot collect donation around to help out as well.  

I have pledged to do the following for Catherina and Qing Qing:  Show the X-rays to our panel vet and seek a second opinion as to what is best for Qing Qing.  If need be, get an appointment so that our vet may better assess the condition.  If Catherina decides to go ahead with the operation, we will help with our funds.  Catherina says she will also raise funds from her friends to help Qing Qing. 

AnimalCare’s beneficiaries are the rescued strays and Qing Qing is definitely a most worthy case in our eyes.
