A lovely little story – handraising kittens

More than a week ago, the caretaker at our local temple called me late one evening, to ask for advice.  Apparently, a mother-cat had come to the temple and given birth to three little kittens, but on that day, the mother-cat had disappeared.

The caretaker was worried about the kittens and he tried to feed them milk but they would not take it.  He said the kittens had just opened their eyes.  I told him to keep the kittens warm and go to the nearest petshop or vet to purchase kitten milk.

The next day, I called him to check on the kittens and he said they were drinking the kitten milk, but the mother-cat had still not returned.

Yesterday, I went to the temple and enquired about the kittens.  The caretaker pointed to one of the baskets near the kitchen, and here’s what I found amidst sounds of mewing:

Three happy, healthy-looking kittens, mewing to get out of the basket!
The caretaker said he later found that the mother-cat had died after being knocked down by a vehicle.  That’s really sad, but I’m glad he had taken such good care of these three kittens.  It isn’t easy to nurse newborns, and the caretaker does not have had any prior experience in taking care of kittens.
But, a good heart and effort are all it takes for us to give it our best shot, with some help from Mother Nature, of course!

Yea, that is why it is so important to provide lots of good clean food and water for any nursing mother cat so that they will not have to wander off looking for food, getting exposed to danger, both to them and their young kittens.

If food is available near them, they can just eat and stay around with the kittens all the time, nursing them.

So sad, poor, poor mama cat!

A can of pure goat milk can be used (but never use cow milk) and cheaper too. My friends found out that it is available in organic shops in many places, the brand is PURENAT Pure Goat Milk powder (without sugar and other additives) at RM29 for a tin of 400gm. It is lower in lactose, which causes diarrhea, higher in protein and closer to cat milk, thus more suitable for kittens. Do not use the other brands of goat milk which has sugar, vitamins and flavor added for human consumption. Only use the pure type.

Well done and best of luck, may God bless you for your kind deeds!
