A quick flashback, Ongsan was discovered to be very sick on the streets by someone who alerted us. Maslinda rescued Ongsan and brought him to two vets who recommended that he be put down. One of our readers responded offering her vet for a third diagnosis. Maslinda brought Ongsan to this vet and the reader funded all of Ongsan’s treatment. Soon after, the reader offered to adopt Ongsan into her home and her family took care of Ongsan for a few weeks until his peaceful passing last weekend.
Below is a sharing from Ongsan’s adopter. We know from the available literature that animals do grieve for the loss of their friends too. As their owners and caregivers, we need to help them grieve and gradually accept their loss.
Dear Dr. Chan,
Thank you very much for the very thoughtful and kind words expressed in your blogpost. My hubby and I are very grateful.
Although we had Ongsan for a short while but it felt like we had him for a long time already. Aslan, Riley and Gim Gim are still gathering around his cage and slept there and left their post only for meals and bathroom breaks. It brought tears to my eyes when I see Gim Gim holding on to Ongsan’s cage as she slept. They miss him too.
Aslan I guess being the intuitive one; on the day that I was taking Ongsan to the vet when Ongsan was waiting to go inside his carrier Aslan came over and grooms Ongsan’s head as if telling him to take care and be well. When I came home that evening Aslan came to me as if asking about Ongsan’s whereabouts and when I told him Ongsan is sick and need treatment and we will bring home as soon as we can he nodded as if understood and went over to his post on his chair and waited and although he knew Ongsan is gone as he came downstairs to look at Ongsan as I prepared for his burial but Aslan is still at his post up to now.
Your words are very comforting and we thank you again for your thoughtfulness. Take care,
Kind regards.

My condolences to Ongsan’s adopted family. I can truly empathize with the family since we too feel the same way having lost Simba after 3 1/2 weeks of taking care of him. It is so strange how these wonderful creatures touch our hearts in such an unimaginable way. They are so special!
Dear Norely,
Thank you very much for your kind wishes and thoughts. We believe Simba had a wonderful, happy and precious moments with you and your family too.
Life is so precious no matter where they come from and no matter how long or short it changes the lives the ones they touched. We are truly blessed to have experience such wonderful and precious moments that we will carry with us in our hearts always.
