Boarding and spaying sponsorship for the 2 mother-dogs and their families (Then Lai Fatt’s)

Ref: http://animalcare.my/2013/06/02/mother-dog-and-puppy-boarding-fund-then-lai-fatts/

A short recap: Ah Fatt made an urgent request for boarding sponsorship for a mother-dog and her 3 newborn puppies and another heavily pregnant mother-dog, all from SS19, because the residents had called the council but fortunately, the council had not managed to catch them in two attempts. A third attempt was in the pipeline (due to repeated complaints from the residents), so Ah Fatt needed urgent help.

We told Ah Fatt to rescue the two families first, and we would figure out a way to get the funds.

It is not in our policy to pay for or even subsidise boarding (only hospitalisation), so our funds could not be used. Our Berjaya Cares funds are to be used only to subsidise medical treatment and neutering (not even for food), so that could not be used either.

The only way would be to raise funds from well-wishers and friends. And that was what we did.

For the sake of saving the lives of these two families (from being euthanised), we did that. But of course, what followed-suit was other applicants asking for the same “favour”, and we really have to emphasise here that we cannot be doing this for everyone. Very sorry about this, but we do not want to make it a habit to entertain every appeal for boarding charges (Or else every applicant will have his or her own story, and who are we to say which is worthy and which is not. We do not want to play judge, it is a most unpleasant task).

In Ah Fatt’s case, we know practically all his rescued dogs are boarded in various places (it’s so difficult to find homes for adult local dogs) and he spends a good portion of his salary on paying for these boarding fees. Ah Fatt works two jobs to sustain his rescue work and he does not apply for every case; only when he runs short.

Based on the urgency of the case, we agreed to do a fundraising for these two families.

We collected the following from our readers:

1. Caramel Puppy RM100
2. Andy Lew RM300
3. Martin Lui RM150
4. Jasmine Ong RM200
5. Chee Pooi Ling RM300
6. Carol Chong RM200
7. Julz Tan RM200
8. Peggy Tiong RM100

Total = RM1550

The estimated cost was RM1800 (we stopped the fundraising after one day as we thought the collected amount should already be sufficient):

Mother-dog and 3 puppies – 1 month stay (RM450)
Pregnant mother-dog (and soon-to-be-born puppies) – 3 month stay (RM1350)

The mother-dog’s 3 puppies were rehomed within 1 week and this mother-dog only stayed for a month. Boarding charges for this family = RM450.

The pregnant mother-dog gave birth to 8 bouncing puppies and all the puppies have been rehomed. This mother-dog stayed for 69 days and was discharged just before Hari Raya, Boarding charges for this mother-dog and her family = RM1035.

The vet only charged RM15 per day per family. Not per dog. Some tests were done for the puppies too, but all these charges have been waived.

Both mother-dogs, who are actually sisters, are now together at a farm.

Both mother-dogs had also been spayed. Charges = RM300

We have reminded Ah Fatt many times to settle the bill, but it wasn’t done, so I personally went to the clinic to settle the bill yesterday.

Boarding charges = RM1485
Spaying charges = RM300

A total of RM1785 was paid whereby RM1485 comes from all the donors listed above (for the boarding charges) and the remaining RM15 from this collection was channeled to the spaying charges. The remaning RM285 for spaying comes from all donors through our Medical Fund (RM85) and Berjaya Cares (RM200).

We thank Adeline Khaw for doing the rehoming of all the 11 puppies and also for providing the photos below (of the two mother-dogs shortly before they were respectively discharged from the clinic).

We thank all donors for their generosity and kindness in responding so quickly to our appeal on behalf of Ah Fatt.

And of course, we thank Ah Fatt for doing the needful for these two families. 13 lives were saved, because of everyone working together!
