Medical subsidy for rescued Dalmatian (Lester Hiew Thiam Hock & Jenny Khong Chin Chin’s)

Updates at 6.17pm: Panda n Gang has contributed another RM66 for Dalmatian’s bill thus making it a 100% sponsorship. Many thanks, Panda n Gang! The amount has already been transferred to Lester Hiew.

The original post:

Lester called me on the day of the heavy rain. A neighbour had contacted his mum, Jenny, to alert her of a dog who had fallen into a monsoon drain and asked if Jenny could help with the rescue.

Jenny did, and the dog turned out to be a Dalmatian who was totally infested with ticks and had two “holes” on his thighs. Lester said there was no less than a thousand ticks on the poor dog, and the photos below will testify to this.

We discussed that the Dalmatian has to have been someone’s pet before this, but has probably been on the road for quite sometime to have got himself infested with “more than a thousand ticks” and to have sustained those two gaping holes on his thighs (the vet posits it is probably due to lying down for too long due to weak legs).

For the rest of the details, please see below.

This initial bill of RM372 covers subcut drip (too weak to be put on IV-drip), multivitamins, lab tests, liver syrup, skin herbal repack, antibiotics, anti-flammatory medication, wound cleaning and anti-tick shampoo (and yes, we subsidise for such a severe case of tick-infestation).

We have subsidised RM306. This subsidy comes from all donors through our Medical Fund (RM86), Berjaya Cares (RM100) and Mr Kok Khee Wee (RM120).

Subject: Application for “Dalmation”
To: Chan Kah Yein <chankahyein@gmail.com>

good evening miss,

i would like to apply for the medical subsidy for Dalmation.
my neighbour called my mother and requested her help to rescue him.
my neighbour and my mother rescued him from a flooding monsoon drain while it was raining heavily yesterday (19/08/2013).
after rescuing him, Dalmation was brought to the vet for further check-up as he was unable to stand for long and he was really, really, infested with ticks.
he also had 2 holes on his back legs, 1 on each side. suspected that he could not stand or walk for too long, he kept lying down so he might have sustained that injury.
according to the vet, he is approximately 3 years old and a pure breed Dalmation.
blood test was also done to check if he was okay as he was really weak.
day-1 treatment was with Dr from a clinic in Klang as our regular vet was closed.
today (20/08/2013), he was brought to our regular vet.
he further receives treatment for the 2 holes and also was put on drips because he is not having enough nutrients and also water inside his body. his drips had to be under his skin instead of the veins on his legs because Dr is afraid that his blood may be too diluted already.
attached are pictures of him.
thank you very much,
Lester Hiew

Bless Jenny and her neighbour for saving this poor Dalmatian.

We discussed if we should put out an alert to look for his owner, but Lester was right in deciding that the dog has to get well first. One thing at a time.

Absolutely. First things first – save his life. Moreover, all his injuries and the tick problem do not look as though they have been newly afflicted.

That is far and away the worst tick infestation I’ve ever seen. Bless you, Lester and Jenny, for getting this dog the help she needs! I hope she’ll find the strength to recover.

  2. a moment to be grateful.

it is thanks to my neighbour who braced the rain and drain water to personally go inside the flooding drain itself to rescue the dog. he has done an amazing job capturing the boy with mum’s help.
i am very proud of my mum who has done her very best within her capabilities to rescue the boy as she has a swollen leg. also, due to that rainy day, she slipped and fell on the floor. she is okay and i am proud of her.

i also would like to sincerely thank Dr Chan and AnimalCare for providing the much needed subsidy, constant guidance, and support. notably, thank you Mr. Kok Khee Wee and Panda n Gang for topping up the remaining subsidy.

thank you everyone who has voiced out their concerns and also hope for the best for this dog. we will, in return, do our best for him.

    thank you.

Oh my goodness!! It must be such a relieved for the Dalmation. Look at the following photos of him sleeping (finally) and couldn’t care whatever is going on in the clinic.

It is said that if a dog is healthy and strong, it is least likely he or she will be attacked by ticks/fleas. Diet plays a role as well as overall health being of the dog.

Thank you to all rescuer for the heroic deed. Hats off! My thoughts are with this Dalmation for his speedy recovery.

Bless you, Lester, Jenny & the neighbour. What a wonderful ppl you are. 🙂

  7. i just got back home not long ago from college and i received a sad news from my mum and i feel very sad to announce this sad news to all of you.

this afternoon, this dalmation’s health state turned really bad. soon after, he passed away. the vet said this may be because due to the infestation of ticks, he had insufficient blood inside of him, causing him to be really weak and collapse.
he was a really strong boy and he really fought until the end.
    he passed away peacefully.
since he was quite a big dog, we do not have a place to bury him so we have decided to cremate him.

i am sorry boy, that you had to go through all that. you are in a better place now.
sorry all, the vet and ourselves really tried our best.

    boy, rest in peace.
