And a Hero comes along…

Today was Hero’s scheduled surgery for the hernia and his neutering.


These are the photos taken last week when Hero was first brought in by Azie.

This bulge is actually due to a hernia where there is a tear inside, and the organs have “fallen” through, thus causing this bulge that hangs down when Hero stands up. We could push the organs back while at the clinic, but the bulge would appear again the moment Hero stands up.  


Surgery was highly recommended because if the intestines and other organs continue hanging down and are displaced from their original position, things could go wrong. For example, the intestines could all get tangled up and Hero could die of starvation.  


Azie could not catch Hero last night, and only managed to catch him at 8am this morning. With the compulsory 8 hour fast, Hero’s surgery could only be done at 4pm today.


The surgery started late, and it went on until past closing time.


I was in contact with the clinic, and later, the vet called to update me, after the surgery.


What was thought to be a simple surgery turned out to be quite complicated. The hernia must have been there for quite some time, because the organs that had fallen through had “attached” themselves to the wrong place. It was quite difficult separating these organs from that “attachment” in order to push them back to their right places. The liver, for example, had also attached itself to the wrong place.  In the process of pushing the organs back, some bleeding happened. The organs were also not entirely intact anymore since they had to be removed from where they were and the attachment had already settled.


The vet said the next few days is quite crucial. 


At this point in time, Hero seems alright, but the vets are worried about internal bleeding later on. Hero will be kept under observation until the vets are confident that he is fit to be discharged.
