Have you heard of Kopi Luwak?

My son, Jia-Wen, went for a holiday to Bali recently and came back with a most interesting story about Kopi Luwak.

He visited the factory and this is what he learnt:

There is this Asian Palm Civet called Luwak (local name) and its expertise is in detecting (and ingesting) the BEST coffee beans. These coffee beans are not digested but will pass through its intestines only to be excreted (defecated) as faeces-covered coffee beans.

The locals collect these faeces (I mean, the beans) and remove the faeces to get the prized (best ever!) beans to be made into the most expensive coffee known to mankind.

That’s how Kopi Luwak is “harvested” and presented to us! Apparently, it is delicious, but Jia-Wen did not try it!

Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopi_Luwak

And take a look:

The faeces @ prized coffee beans

 Nice, huh?

 Even the lady promotes it!

Humans do the silliest things, don’t they?
We don’t even eat it, we pass it out, and they think it’s the world’s best?

For one who picks up cat faeces (with a spade) a few times a day, I don’t find this totally revolting, do you? But of course, I throw away the litter-covered faeces!

It’s expensive too. I don’t think i’ll be able to tell the difference.
There seems to be a civet cat in my housing area. Going after my mango tree.

My bf told me about this before. He is a coffee person and I’m pretty sure he’ll try if he get the chance. Me… I think I will too. I reckon the worst thing that can happen is to get diarrhea. The rest is all in our mind only (faeces and all, hehe).

Anyway, I don’t think any animal lover should try kopi luwak. Not sure how they harvest the coffee beans – hoping that no civets were hurt in the process.

I don’t really know, but apparently the civets are free roaming and the workers look for the faeces every day. If that’s the way, then perhaps the civets are not harmed. Oprah wouldn’t promote it if the animals are harmed, I think? But anyhow, I wouldn’t try it! Plain green tea would do for me.
