Her rescuer called me today, and she is facing the dilemma of not knowing what to do. Although I have found Abby a fosterer, what happens after that? Who is going to take Abby in for the long-term? The rescuer was contemplating having Abby put down, but I’ve told her to hang on for a few more days, please. We will pay for Abby’s boarding at the vet’s while we work harder at looking for an adopter for Abby.
Here’s more about what happened when Abby was dumped by her owner. Abby has been his pet for 13 years, ie. all her life. He decided he did not want Abby anymore now that she is old, so he brought her to be euthanised at a shelter. The rescuer intervened and asked the owner to bring Abby to the vet’s instead. At the vet’s, the owner even kicked her into the kennel. And as he was leaving the clinic, Abby scratched at the door, wanting to follow him home. But he did not even glance back.
That’s sad, isn’t it, folks?
But that’s how some humans behave.
It IS extremely sad….
Abby has an eye problem. As you can see from the photo, her eyes are bloodshot. But I have spoken to the vet, and he said, “The eye is a non-issue, not an issue at all. She just needs an eyedrop for life, that’s all. There is nothing else wrong with her.”
The eyes have probably been neglected too, and that is why it is now bloodshot and there is discharge. The rescuer cleaned her eyes today, and Abby obediently allowed it. There was absolutely no protest at all. Not even in the slightest. I bore witness to this (see photo above).
And all you need is to look into Abby’s eyes, and you will hear her cry. She has been a pet all her life, folks. Now, she has been abandoned to a kennel, and with her sixth sense, which most animals have, especially mature animals, she probably knows what is going on too. That is why she is so, so sad.
I have told Abby to hang on and we are doing our very best to give her a home.
Please help pass the word around, folks.
Please help Abby.
It is a shame to cast an animal out just because she is old. That’s like casting one’s grandmother out, to be killed in her old age.
P.S. Euthanasia, conveniently called “painless death” is not “painless” in the real sense of the word. We empathise with people who have no choice but to have an animal euthanised because it is suffering and is in great pain. I am sure it is equally painful for any compassionate person to have to come to this decision. But Abby is not sick at all. She only has an eye problem and is old. If a healthy animal is forcibly euthanised, it will resist. It will cry and appeal for its life. Try going to the shelters that put animals down – see how the animal protest and cries for help as it is being held down to be euthanised.
Nobody wants to be killed.
Not you, not me, and certainly not the animals.

Good Morning, Kah Yein,
I read about Abby and I cried. I wish I could help. I have an old dog myself (she is about 11 years old) and I love her very much. I don't know what I will do if she goes. It is sad to know that people can think of Euthanasia because it is an easy way out of a stumbling block. My other older dog were Euthanised because of ailments that could not be cured any longer. Until today, the decision still hurts me.
I will pray that a kind soul would come by soon to give Abby a kind and loving home. Just until she is ready to go to Dog Heaven.
Yours sincerely,
Violet Yee
When our beloved pets reach the end of their lives, what we can do is exactly what we would do for our human friends and family – make them as comfortable as we can. Let them go peacefully. Use compassion and conscience as our guide, and we'll somehow get it right.
We still feel the pain till today when we decided to euthanise our 13years old mixed poodle due to his suffer and pain. Abby is not wrong at all, why her owner could have such cruel act? He will get his karma soon or later.
Kah Yein, I am living in Penang, if possible I would like to help too, pray hard for Abby to find a loving owner soon.
Being old is not a sin to deserve to be treated this way. I wish you have a good and loving home, Abby.

Hi everyone, thank you very much for you comments, concern and prayers. I am doing my best to find an adopter for Abby. Hope everyone could pls pass the word around. Please send the link out, hopefully it reaches someone who can provide what Abby needs – a loving home. I have two 13 year-old dogs and 9 rescued cats, and cannnot house Abby. My jealous (alpha)dog, Bobby, will object, and my cats might run away from home out of fear.
Dear Kah Yein,
Pls pls do not allow Abby to be put down… Hope u wil (i knw u will) soon find a solution to it…. Pray hard…
poor abby. i dont know what to say. if only i could adopt a dog but i am not even staying permanently here. i pray she finds a home. if all fails, i hope God will understand that the people who tried to help did their best. as for the owner, i hope when he gets old, he gets the same treatment from his kids or family. karma gets around and its a fact.
I've been working to save an elderly cat (19 years old) who was surrendered to a shelter because his owner was moving. I can't imagine dumping my companion of 19 years in a strange place, to face an uncertain future without me! Older animals like Abby are a wonderful gift, and the people who are willing to adopt them will be rewarded with love and devotion that can't be measured in terms of days, weeks, or years. I hope someone will open up their home to Abby just as you've opened up your heart to her. Thank you for fighting to save her.
