But there are still good people around…

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, as the movie title goes….

While there are people who do the most horrendous things to animals, on the other end of the spectrum are also those who have the kindest hearts.

While I was at the clinic today, I met a Malay man who was buying a few cans of Hill’s Science AD.  As he was leaving, he spotted an orange kitten in the cage and quickly enquired if it’s up for adoption.  He was so excited and kept calling the kitten “Rocky” to check if it would respond.

It seems his neighbour had just adopted a cat (Rocky) who looked exactly like this one, but had lost the cat just before Hari Raya and has been crying her heart out every since.  This kind man has been going around looking for Rocky (for his neighbour).  He said another neighbour had lost a dog recently, and he also went around to hunt for it.

So I asked if he would like to adopt one of Rani’s kittens and he said no, because he is already feeding 13 stray cats near his house.  He has been feeding and looking after these 13 cats since birth.  All have been spayed and neutered, too.

So, who was he buying the AD for, I asked.  For one of the strays who has a fungal infection, he said.  This cat has to go on AD for life, plus a fungal medication, and it costs him RM300 a month just to look after this cat.

And as the man was leaving the clinic, he said, “Well, if you want to look after, you must look after properly, right?  You must spay and neuter, and if they are sick, you must give them the proper medicine.”

YES, sirree.  You are absolutely right!

Can I invite you, sir, to give a lecture the next time I give a public talk on kindness to animals?

I wish there were more kind souls like him.

So, we have kitten-dumpers, pedigree pet-dumpers, parent-dumpers, but we also have these angels without wings.

It takes all kinds to make this world, doesn’t it?

  1. Hello Dr Chan! I love your posts. Things out there may be challenging but there are still many good people out there. I enjoy reading your posts and would be great if you allow the mail function ie share with friends….
I am so happy to meet you.

  2. Wow!! Thanks for sharing Dr. Kah Yein!

I have never been thought of this way for helping animals :). I always thought that I can't do anything (except donating money) since I stay in apartment which does not allow me to have pet and I am international student here.

I am going to do what I am able to do to help those who are in need 🙂
