Sue, from Klang, called me today on an SOS. One of her students had just rescued a little month-old kitten who has blood in her diarrhoea stools.
So, I told Sue she could bring the kitten to our panel vet in Subang Jaya.
This is the poor little kitten. When we opened the carrier door, she just walked slowly to the wall and stayed there (that is not a good sign, kittens should be very busybody and curious).
Our vet said point-blank that the kitten is very emaciated, she is skin and bones and is actually dying BUT this can be reversed with good nutrition, a lot of physical and emotional warmth and if she responds to the medication.
We had her dewormed, and fed the first dosage of medications (antibiotics). She put up a protest because the antibiotics are terribly bitter, and started salivating after that.
She kept going to sit on the file, probably because she found the table far too cold.
Upon examination, she has some rotten teeth, which is rare for a month-old kitten, so the vet suspects injury to her jaw. The left side of her face is swollen too. There is pain on this side as evidenced by the protest she put up when the vet opened her jaw. One tooth is already black and has to be pulled out, but this can only be done after she recovers. Any form of sedation might kill her now.
The good news is that her pink gums and tongue show good circulation still. And she can still put up a protest and struggle (I’ve seen worse cases and those that don’t make it, like Apache, for eg.).
The plan now is to put her on medications, and feed her nutritiously. And, keep her warm all the time.
If she eats, it is a good sign. Her diet for now is boiled chicken only.
We have done everything possible for her already. It is up to her body to respond to the medication and food, and her own will to live. And of course, for the universe to provide an answer.
Sue and her husband has decided to foster her until she is well enough. This is in spite of the fact that they have other cats to look after. They have called her Mimi.
Mimi would have to be kept isolated from their other cats, because we do not know what diseases she may be carrying. Just to be on the safe side (in case she has parvo virus), Sue and her husband has been advised to wash their hands in a pail of 1:30 (chlorox to water) solution after handling Mimi.
To Sue and hubby – we are grateful you have decided to foster Mimi and we thank you for your compassion. Sometimes, rescued animals fight very hard to get well when they know their rescuer/fosterer loves them and wants them to live.
They just know.
Let us all radiate positive healing energy to Mimi so that she will recover very quickly.

P.S. Mimi looks like a medium-haired kitten.

Why wasn't the kitty tested for parvo virus at the clinic? This way Sue and her husband would know for sure if the kitten is infected or not.
Our vet is quite sure it is NOT parvo – we are only being extra careful. Also, the test is not conclusive, according to our vet. Isolating a new kitten is good practice because we do not know what other diseases it might have.

Vets do make mistakes – a lot of times – when it comes diagnosing parvo and distemper. The best precaution is always knowing for sure – the nature of the infection so that support treatment can also be administered in case the feline or canine is infected.
