Good morning, everyone. I am as sick as sick can be, but life has to go on. So, life goes on.
About two weeks ago, I received a call from one of our panel vets. He said someone had brought in a purebred Tibetan terrier for an “evaluation”, after having bought the pet from a breeder. The vet found that the terrier had some neurological problems. She would turn in circles. So, this was conveyed to the owner.
The owner then decided that she did not want the pet, and tried to return it to the breeder, but the breeder would not take her calls.
I was asked if I could help rehome the terrier. I said of course I could TRY, but there is no promises that I would be able to find a home for it. But let’s take it one day at a time. Since then, I have been waiting for this owner to call me. I need a photo to post.
The owner finally called me yesterday and explained the situation. She is not able to care for this pet now that she knows the pet has neurological problems. I shared with her my experience in looking after Vixey (who had worse than neurological problems) and Daniel’s in looking after Yorky. Vixey lived for 2 years. Yorky, for 4 months. Vixey was rescued from the rubbish dump. Yorky was abandoned by the breeder to be euthanised at our panel vet. I told her it can be VERY rewarding (though intense) looking after a really needy and helpless pet. You learn so much about life – don’t we all have to die one day, sooner or later? But it’s moments that count. Make those moments happy ones. Your life would be so much richer after the experience. And you become so much stronger too.
In fact, I spoke to the vet last week, and he said there is a chance that this pet might recover. There is no telling what love and care can do. Miracles CAN happen.
Despite all I said, the owner wasn’t keen.
She said the breeder said if she returns the pet, the breeder would just put it down. In fact, the breeder advised her to put the pet down herself. And she said she did not want to be the one to do it. She also said her daughter might not be able to handle a premature death of a pet.
So, I said to send me a photo and I’ll post it up for her.
I am still waiting for the photo.
Here’s my note to breeders who choose to put down “defective” pets: Do please take a moment and consider the fact that you are using animals to make money for yourself. When a pet is found to be defective, you kill the pet, or you sell it to some unsuspecting buyer who doesn’t know any better. Please take a moment to search deep within your heart and think of what you are doing. What goes around, comes around.
To everyone: Puppy mills and kitty mills are places where cruelty abounds. Google it and find out more, please.
In the event that this owner does send me the photograph of this doomed-to-die Tibetan terrier, please let’s work with us and find her a home. Let’s show these people that there are more compassionate ways of dealing with this sad situation.
Killing is never the solution.

To all the cruel breeders out there who make money out of animals and who are so stone cold and would instantly put a 'defective' animal down – SHAME ON YOU.
Would you put down your own child if he/she is born with a defect?
As for the owner's daughter, death — whether premature or not — is part of keeping pets and, in fact, part of life. What a great opportunity to teach a child to cherish a pet for whatever time they have together and to let go with grace when the time is up! So very sad, and I wish more than ever that I could foster this (or any) dog in my condo… 🙁
Hi Manekineko, I told her that too, that dealing with death can be an "enriching" experience, something we all need to learn about, but she wasn't keen.
There are tens of thousands of stray dogs in Malaysia and our own local dogs are every bit as intelligent and trainable as imported pedigree 'branded' dogs, yet Malaysians continue to buy imported dogs from breeders, pet shops, etc.
Why these obsession with 'branded' dogs? Maybe these people think that it is like a Mercedes or BMW is better than a Perodua or Proton. In that case, using the same line of argument, the mat sallehs are of better quality as humans as Malaysians in general? Hmmnnn… maybe so, because mat sallehs in general like animals and treat them kindly. Heheheh…
So, if we catch our local stray dogs and export them to Australia and US as 'pedigree Malaysian dogs', they become pedigree branded dogs to the Aussies and Yankees because the dogs are now 'imported' from Malaysia? No?
Hmmnnn… the next time Kah Yein rescues a bunch of captured dogs from the pounds maybe she can have them airflown to Australia as pedigree Malaysian dogs and they will be quickly adopted by the Aussies. No?
Hi Straydog, I would gladly raise funds to transport any animal to a more animal-friendly place on this Earth, if only we can find one that will accept our animals!! But I'd still want to work on where I am right now. There is hope yet. We need education more than anything else. And the best way to educate is by example.
Don't give up hope, KY, afterall, now we have the "Singapore breed" which is actually the longkang cat! Yes, we look down on our very own kind, but others appreciate them.
Meanwhile, to boost your tired and wornout system (physical), carry around and drink lots of Tropicana orange/fruit juice. Delicious, lots of vitamin C and energising!
Er, no, I am not a Tropicana salesman, just love your Princess loads and making sure her beloved and heart-of-gold Mama is fine …. hahahahhahaaaa!!!!!
Thanks, Anon. Will do that.
