YB Charles Santiago visits the MPK Dog Pound

Today, YB Charles Santiago visited the MPK Dog Pound (after all the “evidence” was wiped out on Monday where many dogs were euthanised and the pound was cleaned up in preparation for this visit).

Mandy, our volunteer, was there to represent AnimalCare and to put forth our proposal for better and more compassionate treatment of the dogs.

Here’s what she writes:

As all of u all know that today at 11am Charles Santiago, the Klang MB is visiting the dog pound. I was already in Klang travelling from Sg.Buloh at 10am together with a group of 4 volunteers who contacted me the day before to join us in the rally of betterment of the klang dog pound plight. We reached the pound at 10.50am and when we were there no one else was there yet. Therefore, we proceeded to check on the dogs and the group of 4 volunteers brought boiled chicken breast meat to be fed to the dogs! Boy, they were hungry! The 4 volunteers who came were Wei Yang, Jacelyn, Yen and Evelyn (hope i get their names right). i was beginning to wonder where are all these people who’s supposed to come were.

Around 20 mins or so later, i received a call from Charles Santiago himself asking for directions to the pound as he was lost too! (I was not surprised as there were no proper signboard to direct us). I proceeded to go out and directed him into the pound and i bet he’s surprised by the road condition leading into the pound too and he must wondering why the heck that the pound was so secluded. There are instances where dog owners fails to locate the pound when they go there on weekends to claim their dogs and since they do not have the caretaker’s numbers they will have to call back MPK office on Monday to find out and when they finally get there a few days later their dog has already been put to sleep.

Putting those aside, when Charles arrived we told him before his arrival many dogs has already been put to sleep in order to ‘spruce up’ the place and the numbers of dog being put to sleep is 85 when he questioned the caretaker. When questioning the caretaker on whether they clean the place up with detergents and bleach they said yes! The truth is i didn’t see any detergents in sight and i can only find 1 empty Clorox bottle. I have prepared a proposal to MB Charles on our mission to promote CNRM with attached photos taken on 14/1/2010 where there’s at least 200 dogs at the pound. These are the list that AnimalCare proposed:

1) CNRM for Klang dogs as an ongoing practice.

2) No more killing at the pound-captured dogs to be neutered and release at designated area.

3) Neutered stray dogs and cats (indicated by the left ear tip) should not be captured anymore.

4) Dogs with licences should be spared from being held captive at the pound. The owners can be traced through the licences.

5) Proper food for the dogs at the pound on a daily basis.

6) Sick dogs should be isolated from the healthy ones to avoid spread of diseases (Isolation ward must be built)

7) Collared dogs must also be segregated at a designated area.

8) Enclosures must be in hygienic conditions whereby detergents & bleach is use to clean & disinfect.

Halfway through our discussion, guess who arrived? The DOGCATCHERS! Great, now we can show MB Charles how they man handled the dogs and pups. Some photos taken as attached has to be done discreetly as they were staring daggers at us, oops i mean me, since they were the ones i had arguments with (refer to to the blog-animal cruelty abounds). They were strangling the dogs with the wire loops when transferring them from the van to their enclosures (one of the volunteers spotted a puppy jaws was hurt due to the mishandling) as it was dangled from the jaw when looping them. MB Charles was fed with two accounts of stories ( one from the caretakers and the other from the NGO’s-us), he must be confused too but i told him just take a good look around and you’ll know what we meant. Although the enclosures was hose down less than an hour earlier, the place is already filthy with urine and faeces. It is because they are too many dogs in one enclosure too. They dogcatchers brought in another 6 dogs, 1 mum with her 4 pups and another golden one. (See pics attached on how they manhandled the golden dog-the pic was discreetly snapped to avoid being detected) and also look at the van’s condition when they brought in the dogs (poo and urine lining the floor- as a result of those dogs being traumatized).

While opinions from volunteers are also being discussed at the pound, guess what? ANOTHER van arrives (also the Klang Utara van- there are 2 vans from Klg Utara and 2 vans from Klg Selatan) bringing more dogs. According to some sources, the Klang Utara gang are the more aggressive ones, they are usually the ones on catching rampage and their enclosures are usually packed to the brims. To cut the long story short, after MB Charles left we were shooed out from the pound by one of the dog catchers ‘superior’ (whom i had argument with the last time). They were communicating in Tamil and i guess they want to lock the pound to prevent access to us the next time. They were like angels when MB Charles were there and after his back is turned they act like a bunch of devils.

They definitely telling their good side of stories but you know what, A picture paints a thousand words!

And now, the photos:

Submitting our proposal to YB Charles Santiago
Explaining to the YB.
Looking at the (now) cleaned-up condition at the pound.
This is what it is like now.
Yes, they sure cleaned it up.
Squeaky clean.
Here comes the dogcatchers.
A new catch.
Talking to the dogcatchers.
“AFTER”
(20th Jan 2010)
Here are the “BEFORE” pictures:
15th Dec 2009
This alsatian mix was put together with many sick dogs, one is dead, lying in blood.  We took this dog (I called her Selphie) out.  She has since been adopted.
We also took this Chow-look-alike out and some others from this enclosure.  We called the Chow-look-alike “Tai Kor” and he is living in LLLP now.
This is a dead dog, put together with other healthy dogs.  We took every healthy dog out of this enclosure.
14th Jan 2010
Where are all these dogs now?
We have no space or resources to rehome these dogs now.  We are still funding the medical treatment of 8 sick dogs out of the 36 adults that we rescued and rehomed.
Every week, the pound would fill up.  Klang is on a rampage to rid of town of stray dogs.  The authorities appear to be intolerant of the presence of stray dogs.
We can only hope that YB Charles Santiago will look at our proposals.  We appeal to him to exercise compassion for these poor creatures who have done no wrong except to have been born as stray dogs and to live in Klang.

Yes, the roads leading to the Pound are riddled with potholes but there is so much efficiency when it comes to the dog catching dept.
