I received an urgent call from Julie this evening. It seems NiceNice was suddenly in a critical condition. Her heart was beating very fast and she did not look well at all.
I met Julie at the clinic, and the vet said NiceNice was dying. Her body was extremely cold and she was very weak. The vet pressed her abdomen, and expressed a lot of faecal matter from her intestines. She was also very anaemic. It seemed to be a case of toxemia.
The vet did not quite recommend treatment as he said the chances of survival were almost nil, but if we wanted, NiceNice would have to be put on drips and given a blood transfusion later. This means that NiceNice would have to be left at the clinic over the weekend. I assured Julie that I would respect her decision, whatever it may be, and if she chose treatment, we would definitely help her in the medical bill.
Knowing that the end was near, Julie did not want NiceNice to be left alone in the clinic. So, Julie finally decided that she would take NiceNice home, and make her as comfortable as possible.
The vet said to keep NiceNice warm and syringe-feed glucose water. I rushed home to get the hot-water bottle and some glucose for Julie to take home.

Before we left the clinic, the vet said the signs were not good – NiceNice was already breathing through her mouth by then. But she was calm and in peace. We told NiceNice to stay strong, and Julie drove home with the little one on her lap, bundled up in two towels for warmth.
After about ten minutes, I received another call from Julie.
NiceNice had passed away peacefully on Julie’s lap.
I drove over to Julie’s house to help her. NiceNice was truly a picture of peace. There was no indication of any struggle or pain on her face. Julie wiped NiceNice clean, we wrapped her in a white cotton cloth, and buried her in Julie’s garden.
Rest in peace, little one. You had three wonderful weeks with Julie and received much loving care from her and everyone who prayed for your recovery.
During the three weeks, NiceNice was very happy at Julie’s house, responding to her love and care, and even Julie’s other cats looked after her and kept her company. She was even able to crawl around on her two front legs and had a hearty appetite. Julie said she had a good meal yesterday.
NiceNice’s life was meant to be a short one, but it was filled with so much love. We are glad there was no prolonged suffering for her towards the end. She came into Julie’s life for a reason, and when that was done, she went swiftly and peacefully.
Julie said NiceNice was such a strong little kitten. Despite having been bitten by a dog that had left her two hind legs paralysed, she showed an incredible will to live on with whatever she had. She never gave Julie any problems. In fact, she brought much cheer to Julie, always welcoming her back from work every evening with happy mews.

Nice-Nice had a "good" death. For all the "sufferings" she received so much kindness in the short span of her chapter as a kitten. Many cats and even human live long long time of "unhappiness".
Focus of the good that has been given and let go the guilt that serves no purpose.
