We had the privilege of meeting Meiji Lai sometime in 2009 during one of our trips to Bentong. A few months before that, Meiji had called me requesting financial help for her 80 over rescued dogs whom she was looking after single-handedly in her sanctuary up on a hill in Raub. I told her I would do my best to raise funds to help her with the cost of spay-neuter for her dogs. She had already been sending the dogs, four at time, to Klinik Kembiri, but there were so many of them, so she really needed financial help.
For more photos of Meiji’s sanctuary and our first visit there, please see this: http://animalcare.my/2009/12/meiji-lai-true-blue-dog-angel.html
Since then until now, we have helped Meiji in the following:
(a) Sponsored the spaying-neutering of 38 cats and 37 dogs (Klinik Kembiri).
(b) Medical treatment for 6 cats and 9 dogs (our own vets).
(c) Vaccinations for 59 dogs.
(d) Organised free mass spaying-neutering for 25 dogs.
(e) Purchased an industrial gas rice cooker.
(f) Sourced donations of food for the dogs and cats.
(g) Raised funds to build a new fenced enclosure for the dogs.
(h) Raised funds to help in food and maintenance of her sanctuary.
The number of dogs in her sanctuary has increased to more than 110 now and Meiji can no longer accept anymore animals as she is running the sanctuary single-handedly (her sister helps her sometimes).
Her source of income is derived from rubber-tapping and she lives a very simple and frugal lifestyle, planting her own vegetables. There is also no electricity and water supply at her sanctuary. Her source of water comes from the mountain stream. When night falls, it’s candlelight at the sanctuary. Yet, under such austere conditions, Meiji continues to look after more than 110 rescued dogs in her sanctuary.
The dogs are fed kibbles, rice and sardines. Chicken meat is an occasional treat. Some dogs are on a special diet since they have some sort of illness or skin problem. Sick dogs are brought to the vets in the Klang Valley for proper medical attention. Quite a number have undergone surgeries for various problems. Every dog receives the basic vaccinations and one follow-up. Every dog is spayed-neutered.
Every dog has a name, and they all love Meiji.
Meiji used to ferry the dogs on her motorbike in the early days before she acquired a jeep. She could take up to 4 dogs on her motorbike – one cannot help but marvel at the tenacity and devotion of this wonderful angel to the voiceless and helpless.
What Meiji needs now is funds for food and medical treatment for the existing dogs and the daily maintenance of her sanctuary. I have been doing my best to raise funds for Meiji since 2009 and now would like to extend this request to all of you.
If you would like to help Meiji with funds, please text an sms to Meiji (removed). There is no reception up at her sanctuary, so she will not be able to receive your sms until she comes down from the hill.
On this note, I would like to personally record my thanks to two of my friends who have recently extended their kindness to Meiji with their generous donations: Mr PC Leong & Mr Soh Ah Tee.
Meiji has also appealed for the kind understanding and consideration of rescuers who keep asking her to take in more animals. She has her hands full now and simply cannot take in anymore. Likewise, I also appeal for this understanding as I have personally seen how much work it takes for her to run this sanctuary all by herself.
Your help would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

If only I have the funds to help, she would be the 1st one on my list.
I can only salute Meiji for what she's selflessly doing for the dogs and hope that rescuers will stop asking her to take in their rescues. As a volunteer in dog shelter, i can relate to how helpless we can be sometimes when some dog rescuers keep dumping their rescues to us and wash off their hand after that.
Yes, I agree to it too but its better than abandoning and dumping the helpless innocent souls into rivers, streets and places where they cant fend for themselves. At least, they are responsible enough to pass them to animal lovers like ANGEL MEIJI
Hi all, please be informed that Meiji HP number is no longer 0173636916 anymore because I have purchased this number since Jan 2013. I have received TOO MANY calls from anonymous number looking for Meiji/Lai Fun until I have to search who is this Lai Fun is. If anyone alert this, please do take notes and do not call the number again.
Thanks
Dear Jesslyn,
I read both your comments and I empathise with your problem. Has there been an influx of calls again? A spokesperson of Meiji told us and everyone we know never to contact her again sometime in July 2013 as she would like to be left alone and that her finances had been taken care of. We respect her request and have have done our part in informing everyone that we know.
If you see her hp in anymore of our blogspots, please let me know. Those are all very old blogposts, though, and I am not sure if anyone still reads them unless they do a google search and it leads to those posts. But from the dates on them, I hope people know these are very, very old posts.
Thank you.
