Someone left a comment asking how to deal with a neighbour’s cats who are causing a lot of trouble for her. She has spoken to the neighbour but to no avail. She doesn’t want to report to the authorities knowing that the authorities would just capture and kill.
I truly empathise with her.
Here’s a leaflet from the Cat Welfare Society, Singapore. They have given me permission to use it freely.
On the left side is what to use if you DON’T like cats. On the right is how to attract cats into your house!
If you have a problem with cats….

Some of the things on the left is NOT ok to use unless you intend to harm or kill the cats! Chillie gets on their fur, mouth and eyes! Moth balls are very toxic even for humans, and to crush them getting them all over the place and air, my, my, my! Bad, bad advice ….
Hi anonymous,
Chillies will sting the cats but I think all cats will at least sniff them out first before even touching or licking them. Try smelling crushed chillies and see if that doesn't make you want to sneeze or make your eyes watery even. Perhaps the same thing will happen to cats and hopefully will keep them away.
As for the crushed moth balls, why don't you try putting them in little muslin potpourri bags and hang them? When cats sniff these bags, hopefully the smell will keep them away.
P/S: Instead of outright labelling some tips here as bad advice, maybe next time YOU can come up with good advice instead that you can share with everyone here.
Can the commentator be more specific so that readers can offer suggestions?
First, is your neighbour feeding the cats properly? If not, they will be hungry and wander everywhere all over the place seeking food. Make your neighbour more responsible by asking him/her to feed them sufficiently.
Are you annoyed because the cats are spraying urine or fighting? Tell your neighbour to spay/neuter the animals because in 80% of cases, they stop. Even if they continue to spray urine, it is very much less smelly.
Are they noisy? Spaying the females will prevent incidents of howling and also male cats fighting over her.
Are kittens being born and dying all over your drains and garden? Tell the neighbour to spay/neuter all the cats, especially the females.
Are you annoyed because the cats wander into your compound and play, breaking your stuff? Shoo them away.
Do they come poo-poo in your area? Clean well with diluted garbage enzyme and be careful of the fertilizer you use in your garden as they smell like the toilet, so kitties think they are. Or is your place messy? They love to play in your mess, so try tidying up.
If all fails, look at them with different eyes and have compassion in your heart for them.

Thank you.
Hi Doris, I can also see that the chillies do get on their fur, eyes and noses and hurt them. Down the block, I have seen cats walk around in a neighbour's dirty and messy but chillies strewn garden hunting for lizards, mice and cockroaches as if the chillies were not there! LOL!
Yes, they also use mothballs (the smell must make their next door neighbour nauseasous (I felt faint and felt like throwing up just standing at the gate kaypohing). But the cats continued to go there because of the messiness, mice, rats, cockroaches and lizards, real one! LOL!
I agree, if you can't beat them, then join them (love them cats, I mean!)
