Another young rescuer in the making

Last week, Karuna Tan called me. She is 17 years old and has read all my books. Karuna found a litter of 2 kittens in the drainage of her school. As it was raining and the mother-cat was nowhere to be found, Karuna brought the kittens home. 


This is Karuna’s first time nursing baby kittens. She fed them milk using a syringe, massaged their tummies and wiped their mouths after each feed (based on what she has read from Pawprints). 


Being her first time, she did not know what to feed them, so she fed them human milk. Luckily she texted me to ask for advice, so I told her to buy kitten milk, preferably Pets Own Milk, and since Karuna lives in Puchong, I connected her with Punitha (who also lives in Puchong).


Punitha was in contact with Karuna and gave her helpful hints on how to look after the kittens. 


The last I heard from Karuna was that the kittens are all doing well. She is using a kitten milk now, called Petalac. Yes, she doesn’t drive (she’s only 17 and still in school) but she went out (somehow) to buy the milk.  


Sze Too Weiwen’s 4 kittens are doing well too.  She is also a first-time young rescuer.  


If such young first-time rescuers can do a good job AND be willing to listen to advice, so can we.


I came across a saying recently which is so apt. I’ll tweak it to make it more appropriate: If you cannot put your heart into whatever you are doing, take yourself out of the task.  


The whole idea when it comes to helping is to do our BEST, and this includes learning from those who have done it successfully before, and of course, being willing to admit our shortcomings and doing our best to improve what we can do.  


It is all about functioning from that deepest part in our heart – that’s where wisdom resides, and there’s where we will find unconditional, unselfish love.
