Sumitra and Ms Teh shared this story below:
According to the news release from China’s People’s News, whether people believe it or not, this incident actually happened in Hong Kong. The Weekly World Newsreported that a group of workers were bringing a waterbuffalo into a packaging factory, ready to slaughter it to make steak and beef stew.
When they approached the front door of the slaughterhouse, the sorrowful buffalo suddenly stood still, refusing to move forward, kneeling on its two front knees, and with tears streaming from its eyes.
How could the buffalo have already been aware that it was going to be slaughtered, before entering the slaughterhouse? This shows that it was even more alert than many a person. “When I saw what is believed to be a stupid animal actually crying, and when I noticed that its eyes were full of fear and sadness, I could not help but shiver.” Extremely shocked by this, butcher Shiu Tat-Nin recalled: “I quickly called other people to come see, and they were as surprised as I was! We pushed and pulled the water buffalo, but it would not move; it just sat there crying constantly.” Billy Fong, the boss of the Hong Kong packaging plant said, “Mankind has always thought that animals are not like people who can cry, but this buffalo is really sobbing like a baby!”
At that time there were at least a dozen strong, burly men present, but their hearts were softened by the buffalo’s crying, and those who were responsible for killing water buffaloes were even more touched by this, tears welling out of their eyes.
Buffalo weeping non-stopWhen workers from other slaughterhouses heard the news, they also ran to the crying and kneeling buffalo, and the site was soon crowded with people who were astonished at what they saw. Three of them were so shocked that they said that from now on, even when they slaughter other kinds of animals, they will never forget thatbuffalo’s tears.
At the point when a buffalo is crying and people are crying as well, we can all be sure that none of them will kill thebuffalo now. Then the question was how to take care of this matter. Finally, they decided to buy the water buffalowith cash, and then they sent it to a Buddhist temple, for the monastic to take good care of it, so that it could be assured of living out its life peacefully. When this decision was made, an amazing thing happened again: “When there was an assurance that the buffalo would not be killed, it finally agreed to move, got up, and it’s here with us.” How could a water buffalo underst and human words? Shiu said: “Whether you believe it or not, this is really true, although it sounds really incredible.” Undoubtedly, thisbuffalo has changed the lives of these butchers.
I’ve heard of a few stories of crying cows. Somehow cows do this.
But, how many more cry silently each day at the abattoirs, my friends?
Just like us, animals have feelings, too.
All beings fear the rod.
All beings fear death.
Shall we eat less meat?

I make a resolution not to eat beef two years ago in CNY when I discovered the kindness of the cow. It’s the CNY(2009)and i get to pet a cow for the first time.I’ll never forget it.Despite the two cows being tied to a cart and a few Indian boys(the cow carer) will hit them if they misbehaved but one of the cow is licking me when I pet him. From then on I discovered the animals kindness and I vow to never eat beef again from then on.So far I’m an on and off vegetarians because it’s kinda hard to become a complete vegetarians.
I read the story a few weeks ago when someone email it to me. It is so sad that so many animals have to die to satisfy our taste buds.I dislike the food show of HK Ah Mei shown on Sunday whereby she promotes all sorts of so called delicious food …..all live beings one moment alive and the next on the table. You name it and she eats it….snakes, crabs, frogs, crocodile, hens, fish, etc, etc. And she will praise the food sky high and extort the medicinal value of the meat cooked with various herbs. All bull shit. Look at all the monks on vegetarian diet. They are healthy and live to a ripe old age. Examples Master Ching Kung (Amitabha org) and Tzu Chi Master Cheng Yen.
Ask why I watch….1. because i want to watch what she will eat next…2. the rest of the family are same as her, commenting on how fresh and tasty the ‘corpses’ are.It is all right if she wants to eat them. What i really cant stand is the way she ooohs and ahh at the poor animals she picks up when they are alive to be slaughtered for her pleasure. I told my husband why dont he cut a piece of his own flesh and cook. That would be fresher and more delicious! 😀
Never watched before, but it sounds disgusting enough. At least some people eat meat that is already slaughtered (not condoning it, of course), but this Ah Mei, you say, looks at the living animal that is about to be slaughtered, and later eats it? Many people I know refuse to order live fishes in aquariums at the restaurant as they do not want the fish to be killed directly because of them.
What can we do to at least reduce the number of animals slaughtered?
Eat less of them. Or better still, don’t eat them anymore.
Hi Seokthien! That must be one of the cooking/eating shows I see when I visit my parents. I found it disgusting at the way the presenters oooh and aaah over the meat/animal. Can’t we have non-meat eating cooking shows?
Dr Chan/ Chen
I have yet to see a vege cooking show/eating show. All shown on astro or tv recommend meat dishes…the worst is this show which one moment you see the animal alive in the host’s hand (chicken, crabs, fish struggling, snake etc) …she would say how fresh etc etc, extolling the virtues of the live animals and next, you see the animal, cooked (fried, steamed, stewed etc) on the table for her to droll over.
She dont only look, she laughs at the poor animals in her hands which are going to be slaughtered. Trying watching the show once, and you will know what I mean. Sunday (Dine with May on 8TV, shown after the local eat show Ho Chak!:schedule from newpaper)
When i go into the various blogs, what i see are usually recipes on various ways to cook all sorts of meat. Cakes contains eggs. I have yet to find someone’s blog on how to cook simple vegetarian dishes….not one that is from the cook book which takes hours to prepare. Simple, easy to prepare and does not contain meat or eggs.
I am trying Meatless Monday!
One baby step at a time……..
