Yes, the Bard is right.
Horatio, there are more things in heaven and on earth that is dreamt of in our philosophy.
Yesterday, I went to our other panel vet to settle some spay-neuter bills and we got talking about Indy’s case where we still do not know conclusively what was wrong with Indy, or if there is still something wrong with him because he is still refusing to eat on his own.
The vet said he has, in the past, encountered quite a number of such cases. There was a case of a poodle where it would stop eating, have a fever, and the cause could not be determined. It would be on drips for a week and then, somehow recover. After it was spayed, it had the same symptoms again. Fever and stopped eating. Went on the drips again and recovered after a week or so. All in, the owner had spent close to RM5000 on this dog. Nothing showed up on the blood tests, X-Rays or other tests.
So, there you are. There is so much that we still do not know.
As my other vet said, “The trick is to keep them alive and let the body sort itself out”. I’m inclined to agree, especially when more interference from us might do further harm.
We humans have gone far divorced from our natural selves by now, relying on chemicals to sustain our bodies, but animals are still living very close to their natural selves, and maybe their bodies can heal itself in many cases.
On another note, this experience has also made me realise that Indy is a very strong-willed cat with a mind of his own. There was one particular vet whom Indy did not like and at the vet’s mere sight, Indy would salivate. Imagine that. Perhaps that’s the good thing about animals. When they are not happy, they show it outright and make sure you know.
I wish humans were like that, too. It would certainly save us a lot from all the pretense and insincere politeness, which at the end of the day, only serves to confuse all parties concerned.
