Links on using eggshells as a source of calcium powder

A few readers have written in saying they cannot find calcium powder for their pets. Why not consider using ground eggshells?

A reader shared these:

From the links above:

How to Make Powdered Eggshells:

  1. Wash empty eggshells in warm water until all of the egg white is removed, but do not remove the membrane because it contains important nutrients for the joints which helps arthritis.
  2. Lay broken pieces out on paper towels and allow them to air dry thoroughly.
  3. Break the eggshells up into small pieces, and grind them to into a fine powder in a food processor, blender, coffee grinder, or a nut mill, or put them in a plastic bag and use a rolling pin to grind them. Please note that some blenders will not grind the eggshell into a fine enough powder. A coffee grinder works the best.
  4. Store powdered eggshells in a covered glass jar or container. Keep it in a dry place, like the kitchen cupboard.

    Hi Kah Yein!

I found this useful link on supplements. As we cook for our own furkids, we will also need to take note that they get enough nutrients:-)

I also found out that if cats have diarrhea, and they had been on antibiotics, get them to lick yogurt! It will return the good bacteria back to their system (same as us!)

To home-cook food …. infinity and beyond :-p

It is said that if possible, bake the eggshells in the oven at about 150 degrees C for about 10 mins after drying. This is to ‘remove a mineral-oil coating that sometimes added to keep eggs from drying out’.

Quoted from my ‘dog encyclopedia’. 🙂
