“Don’t Cat”? What is that?

Cathy told me all about “Don’t Cat”, available at Daiso at Sunway Pyramid (same floor as Harvey Norman’s).

She uses it to prevent her own cats from stepping into her cables and biting them.

So, what is “Don’t Cat”?

It’s quite an ingenious invention, really. It’s plastic studs that are sharp enough to discourage a cat from stepping into an area, but not sharp enough to hurt it.

Today, after Pole’s latest escape, I figured I’d have to use Don’t Cat on the gutter ledge to “discourage” her from climbing onto it and escaping again.

Take a look…

You see the studs? The green one is to ward off birds while the black and grey (have shorter studs) is to ward off cats.

We had a choice of a few designs.

We finally chose this one. Can you see the shadow of the studs?

It’s quite painful when you touch the studs so it would hurt a cat’s paws if she touches them. Since cats are such careful creatures, they would test out any surface before putting their weight on anything. But I think poor Pole would have to learn it the hard way. She’d have to jump up once, then “Ouch!!” before learning that the surface hurts. Or maybe, she’ll see it from below and know it’s better not to jump. We’ve seen how Pole “measures” and surveys for a long time before attempting to try any escape route. She’s a very careful cat.

We haven’t figured out how to fix the contraption on the ledge yet. Probably need to nail it on or fasten it tightly or else Pole could just whack the thing and knock it down.

Hey, if this works, I could actually take down the cat purrfect fence and place these Don’t Cats on the wall.  Could have saved so much money if I had known about it earlier!

But the purrfect fence plays a dual role – it provides shade for the cat shelves.

unfortunately this did not work on my cats- tested on 2 of them and somehow they still could get on the surface that the cat-away mat was fixed to….similar to the purrfect fence concept, i use a badminton court net and just hang it loosely across the area where i want to prevent my cats from going out eg. across an open window and it works 100% of the time. Nets can be bought at Carrefour sports section for less than Rm20.

Oh gosh… Hmm, then I think it would not be Pole-proofed. How on earth did your cats manage to step onto the mat?

haha they carefully put their paws down between!!! the spikes… can u believe that!!! and then they got used to it and could do it faster!!

OMG! Smart creatures they are. Daiso had two types. The black one had bigger spaces in between the spikes, so we chose the grey one. Oh well, doesn’t hurt to try it out on our Houdini-girl. Worse come to worst, hopefully Mr Gorilla will chase her back home!

they tip-toed between the spikes!! never underestimate a cat!!- could be Pole’s motto!

My neighbour glued them on all their walls to prevent my cats from entering but my diligent cats have no problem with them. The mousers even tore them down because they felt the spikes are an obstruction to them performing their important jobs of keeping my neighbour’s premises rodents and cockroaches free. But every time my furballs bring home their prize from over the wall, I will dutifully throw it back.

I think that it is important to demonstrate what an important job my furballs have done and hope that in time, there will be come some enlightenment, maybe some show of gratefulness and appreciation too from over the wall.
