Remember the Selayang Mange Brothers?

In February 2010, MDDB asked me to help take out all the puppies at the Selayang Pound when we went there to bring cooked food for the dogs. There were 23 puppies in all and I loaded them in my car using a cage and several cardboard boxes and brought them over to PAWS for temporary shelter and took 8 of the sickly looking ones to our (then, panel) vet for treatment.

The two photos above show the family I called ‘The Mange Brothers”, for obvious reasons!

Well, what has become of them?

Updates from Wani of MDDB:

SOON AFTER WE HAD EXPOSED THE ATROCITIES AT THE SELAYANG POUND EXACTLY TWO YEARS AGO – ANIMALCARE AND MDDB WORKED TOGETHER IN RESCUING AND REHOMING SOME PUPPIES. AMONG THEM PUPPIES WAS THIS BATCH KNOWN AS THE MANGE BROTHERS. THE PUPPIES WERE ALL WEAK AND MANGE RIDDLED. DESPERATE TO EITHER FIND THEM HOMES OR AT LEAST FOSTER CARE WE TOOK THEM TO OUR ADOPTION DRIVE TO SUMMIT SUBANG JAYA.

Mr and Mrs Tan and their children had come to the adoption drive after reading that the Selayang puppies would be there. There were also other puppies that did not have any skin problems and looked good. We still remember how Mr Tan had told his children to take the the puppy that was in the worst condition amongst the lot – because their intention  being there was to give the unwanted and destitute a home.

The took the mange brother with the worst mange – whose back can be seen in the picture. Once back home Mange brother had many many health problems an had to be admitted to the veterinary clinic. We believe he pulled through because of the love they had shown him.

However like most males, Mange Brother did not let his weak physical condition prevent him from sowing his wild oats – so a few months later but when he was not even a year old – Mange Brother jumped the Tan’s Cocker Spaniel. The liaison with the older woman produced a son – who was of a unique breed.

Luckily, soon after he had jumped the older lady, the Tans sent Mange Brother to the vet and removed his family jewels.

Mange Brother, now named Loi, lives happily with the Tans together with his lady love and hybrid son. There was only one pup that was born of the union.

The morale of the story is no matter how bad a condition a puppy or dog is in – they deserve a second chance. We wish there were more people like the Tans – who looked beyond the condition of the puppy when adopting Mange Brother.

Out of the four mange brothers – one died while at foster care and the other two were adopted by the fosterer.

Apparently Mange Brother Loi is a doting father and his son G-Boy is a good doggie footballer.
