Subsidy for RayRay, rescued kitten from the street (Jason and Tan Powie’s)

Ref: http://animalcare.my/2011/05/16/injured-kitten-found-in-the-middle-of-the-road-sent-for-treatment/

This story goes back to 16th May 2011 when a student from my college, Jason and his girlfriend, Powie, found a small kitten in the middle of the road. The kitten was brought to our (then) panel vet, and was found to have umbilical hernia. Surgery was recommended for the hernia as well as amputation of the tail, but only after the kitten has grown bigger.

To cut a very long story short, Jason and Powie decided to adopt the kitten and he was named RayRay.

Photo flashback:

Last week, RayRay was finally strong and big enough (it’s been almost a year now) for the surgery and Jason asked if we would be able to subsidise the procedure. Of course we can, especially when we know the history of this case.

Powie writes:

hi Dr Chan, i’ve rescued this injured cat (RayRay) last year on 16th may 2011.he was about 2 weeks old then. We went to the vet who suggested that it is best for him to have his operation after reaching his puberty. The operation to be done next Wednesday includes Hernia removal, tail amputation and also neutering. The vet told us that the total cost for the combination of these 3 operations are about RM500 approximately. This is quite a big amount for me to bear as i am still a student so i hope that i can receive a subsidy from your organization to reduce my burden. Big thanks =)

The surgery was successfully done, and RayRay has also been neutered as well.

Here are photos after the surgery:

The bill is RM369 for the surgery and RM150 for the neutering. We have subsidised RM184.50 for 50% of the surgery (plus treatment and medication) and RM80 for the neutering. The total subsidy is RM264.50 and it has been banked into Jason’s account.

It is really heartening that Jason and Powie have taken up the responsibility of looking after (and adopting) RayRay. If you look at the photos last year when Jason picked him up off the street, Ray Ray was a sorry-looking kitten. I remember meeting up with Jason and Powie at the vet’s and I must say, until today, it still gladdens me tremendously that Jason took up the responsibility of looking after Ray Ray while he was still inside the clinic, after listening to all that he has to do for Ray Ray. Never once did he think of relinquishing that responsibility to someone else (the classic “But it’s not even my cat, I merely picked it up” – none of that at all). He even insisted on paying for the medical charges in that first visit although I offered to sponsor it.

Yes, there is hope for the future and it lies in our young. Sometimes, we just have to show them the way. Sometimes, they show us the way!

Jason says Ray Ray has recovered from the surgery, faster than expected!

Is this the same cat that grew up from the grey little thing that was picked up from the street last year?

Yes, you bet it is!

We wish Ray Ray a wonderful life with Jason and Powie.
