This is sad and shocking, but it has already happened, so we ask for everyone’s sympathy and empathy. Please be restrained in your comments, if any. It helps also to remind ourselves that we too make mistakes and we do slip up once in a while.
Baby Mayo had a good life, short but sweet and filled with lots of love.
From Bernice:
Hi Dr. Chan,
It is with a very heavy heart and with tears still flowing for both myself and Don that we are informing you of Baby Mayo’s passing. The circumstances which lead to his passing is really unfortunate and sad. One of the stray dog that we feed managed to slide open our grill door which was not locked (but was pulled shut), came into the house, went to Baby Mayo’s box and took him. Don was not home and i was out walking the cats. When i came back, Baby Mayo was lying lifeless on my front yard 🙁
We are really saddened by his passing as we have grown really fond of him and have already decided to continue to foster him for more than the initial 1 month agreement (If the vet was in agreement) until we manage to find him a good home. Of course now, everything has been decided for us. He is gone, and we’re both still in shock.
We have wrapped him up, said prayers, shared merits and bade him farewell. Don has given him a proper burial behind our house, and he’s there now together with a birdie and two of my guinea piggies. He may have had a short life with us, but he was loved, pampered and now very sorely missed.
I will inform the vet of Baby Mayo’s passing as well.
With a sad sad hearty,
B.
Baby Mayo was left at the vet’s and we were requested to help find him a fosterer. We thank Bernice and Donovan for offering to foster Baby Mayo when no one else did. Baby Mayo had a very good life and now he is on Rainbow Bridge or in the good place where all animals go to when they depart from this earth.

bernice, don, i am very sorry about baby mayo. please dont blame yourself for whatever that has happened. you gave baby mayo all the love and care. take care
Thank you for your kinds words and SMS’s Nandhini. We’re still in shock…The house feels so quiet without the lil one’s squeaks, and for the first night in the last 2 weeks, I won’t have to do night feeds…But i would do anything, give anything to have him wake me up with his squeaks, and to hold him and feed him again. we have lost our baby 🙁
Bernice & Donavan, I truly understand how you guys are feeling right now. 6 years ago, we had a rabbit named Jerry. He was friendly and tame, loves to be pampered, likes to run around the garden… Our belated dog, Prince (passed away 2 years ago) was very gentle to Jerry when they are playing ( always under our supervision). 1 day, while Jerry & Prince was playing, we had to go out urgently…we called Jerry to come back to his house but he refused. So, we thought its safe…
When we came back an hour later, we found Jerry besides Prince laying lifeless. We rushed Jerry to the vet clinic, but he was pronounced dead. We didnt find any bite marks but his body was wet with saliva. The vet diagnosis was that Jerry had a heart attack (rabbit cannot have too much excitement, it is detrimental to their heart). We were angry with Prince for a very long time, but what is the point? Jerry was gone…
I know both of you are feeling very sad right now…deepest condolences. Baby Mayo is now at the Rainbow Bridge, I bet he was telling all his new friends there that he had the greatest loving parent while he was on earth.
Oh no! Sad. It’s not anybody’s fault, so don’t feel guilty or anything. Baby Mayo had the best of care and the best kinds of love from both of you, and from the readers who fell in love with him too.
Yes, even when a tiny one is gone, the whole house can feel really quiet. But it’s ok…you guys had tried your best, and wanted the best for Mayo. Things happen or almost happens for a reason…let the reason be to learn for the future.
Out of neglect, I left my bathroom water floor trap open when I was bathing my guinea pig. While I was thankful that for being reminded to close the floor trap before it became an accident that would haunt me for life, the thought of it still dawns on me every now and then…gosh, what would I have done if Klunkers really went down the floor trap alive?
Fortunately I never needed to answer that that day. But it is a firm reminder to myself.
Thank you for fostering Baby Mayo when nobody else stood up for him. Most important, he had experience love and family before and when he left.
My god. An unexpected shocking news indeed. Sorry little one.
Thank you for all the kind words…We are coping, and this will not stop us from continuing to provide foster care to other little ones. We hope to see Baby Mayo again at the bridge. Love to all.
