A heartwarming tale of a cat adopting her human family (Melanie Tong’s)

Here is something very nice to share. It’s from Melanie Tong, someone who chanced upon our blog:

Hi Kah Yein,

A 7-month-old, female cat just adopted my family. We are new at caring for cats. I was given your contact so I could ask about shots, deworming, neutering and diet. And where we can go to for help. I’d really appreciate it.
I just saw your page. You have a heart of gold. May you be blessed many fold in return!
Thanks,
Mel
Isn’t that nice? So I replied and sent Melanie our links on caring for animals and what to do when an animal is first adopted. Since the cat is already 7 months old, spaying would be top on the “to do” list. Deworm and spay, if certified healthy by the vet. Vaccination can come later.
Melanie explains:

Fluff actually belonged to my opposite neighbour. While they were away in Mecca, Fluff started coming over for cuddles from my kids. She came over more and more until she practically stayed. We fed her cow’s milk (now I know is a no-no) and food from our table cos she didn’t like the dry cat food we got her.

When my neighbour returned and I spoke to her about time-sharing her cat. Found out Fluff’s mom is a Persian. And that another cat she has has turned territorial and swipes out at Fluff when she comes around. So she said she’d be happy to let us have Fluff full time as she’s happier with us. She told us Fluff was born 3 March this year and that she hasn’t been dewormed, vaccinated or neutered.
My 8-year-old daughter Noelle and my 10-year-old son Marcus were the ones who persuaded us to keep Fluff.
So now she’s getting cat food from the tin. And first thing my daughter’s done when she became officially ours was to get her a collar with a bell. I think Fluff hates it – lol!
Anyway, Fluff comes and goes as she pleases so I really wouldn’t know if she’s pregnant at time of spaying! First thing’s first, get her dewormed, right?
Wish us – and Fluff – luck!
I alerted Melanie about the risks of putting collars on cat, so now, she will get the detachable ones.
Here are some photos:

Aww…

How it all started…

Awww….Noelle and Fluff.

Cats learn too…

Yups, cats want to learn too.

 Me and my favourite people.

 My sofa.

Hey mister, that’s my sofa, please.

We wish Melanie, Noelle and Marcus all the best in caring for Fluff and happy times ahead!

An update:

The neighbour called today and insisted on taking Fluff to the vet for us tomorrow morning. She sees that I’m at work half the day and ferrying the kids around the second half. I was planning to go this Saturday but she was adamant about doing it for us. She also insisted on halving the bill.
And before this, we hardly even talked to each other. Guess animals unite people, huh? If not for Fluff, I would never have known what nice neighbours we have.
Once again, thank you very much!
Wonderful!!

That’s a very heartwarming story. It gave me memories about how I got my first cat too. But it was a little different yet similar to this case. I miss the times and now she has been with me for more than 7 years. Wish this family best of luck! 🙂

      Thank you Rayna!

You got that right Nandhini. We don’t feel like heroes in anyway. More like suckers who fell for her Puss-in-Boots eyes 😉

Such a beautiful kitty with round face.. Good to hear Melanie’s neighbour is kind enough to let her 2 children experience the joy of keeping a cat.

Love the photos! Adorable kitty with 2 beautiful children.

Yes, it was really lovely of her to let us have the cat!

    Hi Melanie,

You have done a good deed, indeed!! I have four cats at home but one died recently..have adopted 4 strays and don’t think I will adopt anymore..

I have this cat named Thursday which I think is very peculiar..Every time I lay out my prayer mat,he would immediately come and lie down on the mat.All my cats are named after the days we found them like Monday and Friday.

It wasn’t a deliberate decision to do a good deed, really. My hubby and I never fancied ourselves cat people until Fluff came along. She grew on us 😉

Adopting an animal and giving them love is the best way to teach children about unconditional love and sense of responsibility too…..

    1. melanie

      Responsibility.

      Ok.

      Here’s hoping! LOL!

What a great story! And I love the photo & caption, “Hey mister… that’s my sofa!” Yes, Fluff has definitely made herself at home. 🙂 I also love the fact that the neighbour is insisting that she will take Fluff to the vet. That’s one lucky cat!

Fluff definitely looks happy… and yes, animals can unite people. I have a neighbour who hates cats previously, never talk with me because im feeding the stray outside.. however since 2 months ago, a kitten came to her house and her children persuaded the mom to keep her.. since then, she always come to my house to ask for advice re: cats. Im glad coz at last she can accept the fact that we are sharing this world with others as well.. tomorrow i will bring her cat for spaying 🙂

I think I was always impartial to cats because my mom hated cats too. She would never let us bring cats into the house. I never thought I would have a cat until Fluff came along.

Your neighbour sounds like me. I’ve been bugging MY neighbour – and Kah Yein – for advice too. And you sound like my neighbour, taking her cat for spaying.

The world need more people like you!

Lovely photos! Fluff’s so photogenic :). She’s lucky indeed to have you and your family care for her and love her.

We’re lucky to have her 😉

Fluff is spending the night at the vet’s. Strange not having her around 🙁

Mine came after she was vaccinated, spayed and deworm. We didn’t even ask for it although we were long longing for a pet cat. Well, she personally came and adopt us too.. It was then when we realize she was ours. Destine! Even the neighbors agreed and thus they gave us our very first cat. You and your family is very lucky, Melanie 🙂 best wishes and hope the kids will grow up together with love and joy!

    Update:

After being spayed, Fluff spent five days in the cage. On the first day, she ate nothing. She was weak and her tummy was hollow. It was heartbreaking. Thankfully, she ate the next day and slowly regained her strength. Then it was heartbreaking to see her caged. We made it six days in the cage lest she roams off and misses her last dose of antibiotics.

Today, we let her out. Surprisingly, she spent most of the time indoors. She went out in the evening. After two hours, I started to worry. So I called out her name. And she came home! I never knew cats do that!

It’s been a rather gratifying journey for this family with its first cat 😉

Thank you all for the encouragement.
