The Taming of the Quack (Days 1 & 2 in his new home)

“If I be waspish, best beware my sting.” – Katherine to Petruchio in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.

Highly awaited updates!!

The reader has requested anonymity, so we shall respect that.

Quack IS fierce indeed. He hisses everytime I approach him but I hiss at him back so he does not do that to me anymore now.
Not much progress made since yesterday, but since last nite, I’ve already put him out of the cage, still in the room, though. And I actually had my dinner with him just to see how he would react: he wouldn’t even touch his food in my presence. BUT…he licked it all clean after I left the room. He ate the chicken bites I gave him in my presence and when he finished eating the chicken bites, he actually stood up and looked at me, as if asking for more. Of course I gave him more…and he finished it all up!

The adopter’s plan, as communicated to me earlier was to “tame” the shrew, I mean, the Quack, with the help of Owl. Owl is the adopter’s fiercest cat. So fierce, that all the other cats run helter skelter the moment Owl enters any premises. Owl can empty a hall of cats by just stepping into it. That’s how fierce she is (yes, Owl is a spayed female). However, Owl is a pussy with humans. Just a tyrant with other cats. Perhaps Tabs is a faint shadow of Owl?

We know if the Quack comes back here to my neighbourhood, his behaviour is not likely to change. But in a new environment, there is hope.

The story continues…

I sent Owl in yesterday. Surprisingly, Owl is ok with him, was just curious. In the introduction, there was no hissing from either one, which I think, is good.
I think Quack is toning down already. The boy learns fast.
Different environment, different strokes. He was a bully in your neighbourhood. He knows he cannot be in my house.
Today Quack did not hiss at me. I actually left the room door open. My other cats went in. They are not afraid of Quack! In fact, one of them came in to finish up his (Quack’s) food, licked it clean. Quack did not react. Since my other cats are okay with Quack, I don’t think I need Owl’s help anymore.
I think Quack is fine. He just needs time and I will continue to eat with him at least once in 2 days just to make him get used to my presence.
For me, it’s already good progress that he did not hiss at me today even though I went quite near him to pick up the plate (unlike yesterday).

It’s only Day Two. He needs time and I have time for him.

Last night’s dinner.

 Eating the chicken.

 Licked clean!

 Out of the cage.

Don’t worry about him staying at the same spot. I peeked at him just now and when no one is around, he will explore every inch of the room! That particular spot is his safe spot. Every time I go in, he’ll be there. I stacked the pile like that just to give him some sort of “protection” so that he would feel safe.

I’m not in the least worried about Quack because I know he’s in safe hands. And I know he will come around soon. No worries at all. In fact…

Celebrate!!

It’s a miracle we found him a home and I cannot thank the reader enough!
