THE Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) will implement the Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) programme in a bid to reduce the population of stray animals with the first trial run commencing June 16.
The MPSP is the second municipal council nationwide to introduce the programme after Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) implemented it last month.
Save Our Strays (SOS) spokesperson April Sham said MPSP would not have to catch the stray animals after the TNR operation.
“The animals will have their left ears clipped with a small metal tag and a round tag will be collared on them before being released.
“The council workers will recognise them by these markings and don’t have to catch or trap these stray animals,” she told reporters in Lorong Air Itam in George Town yesterday.
“Initially, we will use locally-made metal tags and the imported ones once they arrive from the United States. The imported tags are cheaper,” she said.
Sham said the TNR would be an ongoing project conducted by MPSP once every two months.
The TNR programme would be kicked-off after a neutering event organised by MPSP together with other non-governmental organisations (NGOs), SOS and Mercy Group on June 16 at MPSP Building in Jalan Betik, Bukit Mertajam.
Kota Kinabalu City Hall has already implemented TNR and Seberang Prai Municipal Council will be starting it on June 16th.
Which will be the next local council to employ this more compassionate method of controlling the stray animal population without killing?
Will it be your township?
Please speak with your elected representatives and push for it!
(1) Push for your neighbourhood to start TNR first and for your community animals to be exempted from capture.
(2) Push for your local council to implement TNR.
If you can’t have (2), then go for (1).
