About two hours ago, Meiji texted me to inform me that Doby had passed on.
Doby was one of our Klang rescue dogs in 2010. We had brought back 8 from the sanctuary because these 8 were identified as being unwell. Out of these 8 dogs, Wendy passed away of distemper. Sean and Tara survived distemper and were rehomed, Perky and Roger were also rehomed. We were left with Russell, Sweetie and Jackie. Meiji was very kind and offered to take these three to her doggie paradise in Raub. But before that, Meiji happened to visit the dogs at the sanctuary and noticed that Doby was sickly, so Meiji brought him back with her. Doby have since been living happily in the sanctuary, with Russell, Sweetie, Jackie and all of Meiji’s dogs.
But Doby had always had a skin problem and nothing much seemed to help. Meiji resorted to giving him a special diet and occasionally he was taken to the vet for minor problems.

Doby was very close to Meiji and he would personally accompany Meiji when she went rubber-tapping or on her rounds in the jungle. Meiji loved him dearly.
According to Meiji in the phonecall tonight, about a week ago, Doby lost his appetite. Meiji didn’t think anything was seriously wrong and coaxed him to eat before giving him his medicine (for some bite wounds sustained due to fights). During this time, Doby went into hiding and wanted to be left alone. Meiji knew all his favourite spots so she was able to find Doby and give him his medicines. However, on Tuesday, Meiji could not find Doby anymore. She looked everywhere for him. Meiji even cut the grassy area to look for him, but Doby was nowhere to be found.
This evening, Meiji finally found his remains. Judging from the remains, Doby must have passed away a few days ago, probably on Wednesday.
We believe that when it is time to go, we have to go. If all things in life is uncertain, only one thing is certain and that is death. One day, we will all die. When the time comes, we will have to go.
Doby’s time had come and it is time for him to leave his earthly form and take on a new rebirth in a happier realm.
We wish to thank Meiji very, very much for having looked after Doby so well all these years and given Doby that special privilege of being Meiji’s personal bodyguard. The two of them shared a very special bond.
Be happy in your new existence now, Doby!
Doby’s photograph, taken in April 2011 when we visited him.
Animals are such pure beings. They live their lives to the fullest with no pretenses and no expectations. They eat when hungry, drink when thirsty, sleep with tired. They live moment to moment, savouring life as it comes. And when finally, their time is up, they let go and become one with the Universe. They live life simply, as it should be, just happy and grateful with whatever they are given. What a simple and wonderful life they lead.
Doby, for the happy and loyal companion that you have been, this is for you:
Why are there so many songs about rainbows
and what’s on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
and rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it.
I know they’re wrong, wait and see.
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.
