Please pray for Uno, rescued cat with hernia in Kota Samarahan (Siti Azura Juih’s)

Uno, a street cat recently rescued by Siti Azura Juih, will be undergoing hernia repair surgery this Thursday (19th September 2013) in Kota Samarahan. The surgery is estimated to be more than RM1000 (please see below).

Siti Azura, a lecturer in the teachers’ training college, is currently doing her best to raise funds from family and friends for Uno’s surgery. Azura is also applying for our subsidy. We will help as per policy.

We request for your prayers for Uno. May he have a successful surgery and recover speedily.

Dear Dr Chan,

I have another case to present to u regarding one cat which I just named Uno. He is a very senior cat at my workplace. He used to be a very feral cat but yesterday he was a bit tame out of the blue. He came into my friend’s office  and I fed him some food and he ate. However, this afternoon, my friend called and told me that  he is not ok. I went near him and noticed that he has a very heavy breathing. When I touched his chest and abdomen, he growled slowly. I offered him food and he is reluctant to eat. I intend to bring him to the clinic tonight. I’m afraid that his health will get worse if I don’t act promptly. Therefore, I would like to apply a medical subsidy for Uno from AnimalCare Society. Your kind consideration is highly appreciated. I attached his photos for your reference. Tq Dr Chan.

Subject: Uno’s update
To: Chan Kah Yein <chankahyein@gmail.com>

Dear Dr Chan,

Yesterday afternoon, Uno and I went to the clinic for the Xray. This cat has been very good and obedient throughout the xray process. Unfortunately, the result doesn’t favour Uno. He is suffering from diaphragmatic hernia which may be due to auto accident or fall. The only way to fix the hernia is to undergo surgery. The Vet advisef to let him stable for a two days to see whether Uno is fine enough to go through it and come again on Monday for further review. Based on vet’s observation, he is very likely strong and stable. It is just few things that have to consider- 30% surgery may fail and anesthetic risk. This has made me worry sick and I do not know what is best for Uno since there is no other option to correct the injury. Never in my lifetime as a caregiver to feel very restless n worry for all the ‘IF’ in helping the street animals except for Uno because It is a major surgery.

The vet also told me that about the high cost of such procedure. The cost of surgery may exceed RM1000++ as it needs two surgeon to correct the hernia. I do hope that AnimalCare org could consider the subsidy for this poor cat.  Is it possible for organisation to subsidize such case?  I attached his latest photos while waiting for the xray.

Kindly advise doc. Tq very much.

regards,
Azura

I shared with Azura two cases of diaphragmatic hernia which we had encountered; (1) Chewie, a 2 month-old kitten where surgery was needed and was performed. Chewie’s case was particularly poignant as the surgery was miraculously successful but Chewie passed on suddenly after a few days. (2) Buzz, an adult female cat. Her caregiver decided not to opt for surgery and instead, looked after Buzz until she passed on recently. Buzz had a full and happy life. She was only prevented by jumping and knocking into things. Otherwise, she lived as normal a life as any other indoor cat.

But since Uno is already having breathing problems, it appears that surgery is necessary.

We informed Azura that should she decide to put Uno through the surgery, we will help with the bill as per policy.

Dear Dr Chan,

Thank you for sharing about Buzz and little Chewie. Their life journey has given me some insights on what to do after weighing the pros and cons.
On top of that, I have consulted another senior vet at the same clinic to see whether the surgery is necessary or not (Like Buzz). I did further ask based on his experience on cases like this. He told me confidently that most of cases were successful and only a few were fail due to severity of injury. I asked more about Uno whether he is a good candidate to undergo surgery. He said, since he eats well with his condition, he is very stable for the surgery. Indeed, I can’t help feeling very anxious and worry sick about him even though he is stable. the risk is still there. The vet advised not to delay too long as he is afraid that his condition might get worse. Regarding the surgery cost, it may cost RM1000++ due to:
i) two surgeons will have to attend this case
ii) boarding until he is stable.
For boarding, if he copes well after the surgery, he will be discharged within two days. Based on cases and info I read and the vets’ advice, I  agree with the surgery. His surgery is scheduled on Thursday (19/9/2013). Please send positive vibes for Uno and pray for his safe operation.
For your information, I have tried to raise fund for Uno among my closest friends only,So far one has agreed to donate RM100 ( Mdm Jantang Ambu (phone number provided) for your reference). The other three friends have agreed too but yet to donate the fund. I let u know once they have funded this surgery. I pledge to disclose any amount I received from my close friends who are willing to chip in.
Thank you doctor Chan, be it rain or shine, you are always with us here though separated by the vast ocean. Please pray for Uno.
Regards,
Azura
Please pray for Uno and please send positive healing thoughts to him. Azura will let Uno know that we are all rooting for him.
