The Human-Animal Bond
You knew I would work the bond in here somehow, didn’t you? I believe one of the reasons we are seeing dogs live longer is because we treat them as true family members. We take care of them, make sure they are safe and groom them regularly. Leash laws help reduce the number of dogs hit by cars. And, of course, our dogs have access to veterinary care very near the level of health care available to people. All of those factors play a role in longer canine life spans.
If you want your dog to live a long life, here are five things you can do to improve his chances.
- Keep him thin.
- Brush his teeth daily.
- Take him for a daily walk, even when he’s old, to help maintain muscle strength around arthritic joints.
- Keep his mind sharp with regular training and practice of tricks and commands.
- Take him to the veterinarian regularly for wellness checkups.
