Bunny’s urine

Bunny has kidney insufficiency. It’s been ongoing for more than two years now. But for Bunny’s case, his current creatinine level is below the borderline. Still, over the last one year, it has increased, so he definitely has chronic kidney disease.

Bunny also urinates a lot and his urine has been very dilute (totally colourless) for a long time now. All of these are symptoms of progressive kidney disease. During the last urine check, Bunny’s urine was so very dilute and protein could not be detected (because it was too dilute), but the vet says Bunny definitely has protein loss because he has lost muscle mass and weight through the months.

Now, because he is blind, Bunny tends to urinate in the room in specific places. And I always wipe his urine (which would form a whole “longkang” (stream) because there’s so much of it each time), so I know his urine is colourless and has absolutely no smell. This is because the kidneys aren’t functioning well, so they are unable to concentrate the urine.

But sometime last week, I noticed that the urine “longkang” was yellow and smelly. The room actually smelled. And every day since then, Bunny’s urine streams have been yellow and smelly.

So, what’s going on now?

I really don’t know.

Once the kidneys start to degenerate and fail, there’s no turning back. The nephrons in kidneys simply do not repair themselves.

So why is Bunny’s urine yellow and smelly now? I think there’s no hurry to consult the vet on this since I have Cow’s issues to handle for now. Also, Bunny’s constipation treatment is also ongoing – that’s more important. We already know he has kidney disease and that’s being addressed by the thrice-weekly 200ml subcut.

Peek-a-boo, Bunny!
