Bunny’s diarrhoea – the second line of treatment

It has been extremely challenging managing Bunny’s diarrhoea. The first treatment of Metrogyl did not work so I stopped that but continued with his supplements of folic acid and B-12. Then, we saw the vet again and now we are embarking on a fresh regimen of treatment.

The first line of treatment in this new regimen, which was to deworm him consecutively for three days, unfortunately, did not work too. Bunny is now passing watery (completely liquid) stools. Bunny’s fecal examination showed the presence of tape work ova (eggs), hence, the deworming.

The second line of treatment is to put Bunny on a 7-day course of Clavamox (an antibiotic) to address the infection in his gut. The vet saw a lot of bacteria in his fecal examination that day.

I started Bunny on the antibiotics today. Let’s hope it works. At the same time, I changed his Saccharomyces Boulardii to a different brand too. The last time, I used Mega ProBio and that worked on Robin. But this brand is no longer available at the pharmacy now, so they recommended Proladii (from Spain, but there is also a Prolardii (spelt with an “r”) from the US but is not available here). Proladii did not work for Bunny or Indy (Indy is also having loose stools, but for him, it’s a way of life, he gets it once in a while). So I bought BioFlor for Bunny and Indy today. BioFlor contains a different strain of Saccharomyces Boulardii and has a better proven record of effectiveness.

If Bunny gets better, we won’t know if it’s because of the Clavamox or the BioFlor but it does not matter to me. All I want is for Bunny to get better.

The third line of treatment from the vet is to put Bunny on steroids which would help whether it is inflammatory bowel disease or lymphoma in the gut.

But before that, I have not tried Slippery Elm yet. I might give that a try as well since it is recommended in many websites for pets.

I just want Bunny to get well from this dreaded diarrhoea. It’s been more than 2 weeks now. Unlike Indy who had diarrhoea for almost 7 weeks the last time but was fine as a fiddle, Bunny is losing weight, water and protein because of it.

At the same time, the RC GastroIntestinal kibble was only good for two days, as expected. Bunny did not want it anymore after that. I’m also concerned that the first ingredient is “chicken by-products”. Throughout the weekend, I struggled with getting Bunny to eat. I was practically offering everything that we had just to ensure that he would eat. Never mind if it’s fish too, as long as he doesn’t starve. He has lost enough weight as it is.

This morning, Bunny did not want any of the food offered and he went for Cleo’s left-over raw food (yes, Coco&Joe’s) instead. Well, okay, that’s good too, as long as you eat, Bunny.  Actually, if Bunny goes back to raw food, that would be great. I really think that based on our cats’ health, raw food does them a lot of good.

This photo was taken yesterday, during Bunny’s morning ritual of sunbathing at his scratching post. He normally takes a nap here.
