It’s all quiet on the Western front.
Samantha ate the Primal Turkey yesterday. So it was a case of hesitance due to it being a new taste. Now, she gobbles it all up.
Why I seemed anxious is that I know cats are so resilient and will not show pain or distress until it’s really bad, so I want to be able to tell if Samantha gets into any distress and I can take her to the vet’s for delivery assistance.
I know that animals are much stronger than us human and the majority of them would be able to give birth very naturally. However, remember Joanie?
Joanie was a street cat in Old Klang Road, supposedly looked after by her feeder. Her feeder left her by the roadside, suffering in obstructed labour for TWO WEEKS before calling me for help. When we reached, Joanie was ice cold and there was a leg bone of a fetus stuck at her vagina (breech delivery). We rushed her to the vet’s only to be told there was no way she could survive that and the most merciful option was to have her euthanised. Of course I said no and I asked the two surgeons to carry on with surgery to try to save her life.
Immediate emergency surgery was performed. The vets told me Joanie would probably suffer from brain damage too, seeing how critical her condition was. I said, just proceed, we will work it out from there. During the surgery, the vets said all three fetuses had decomposed inside her into a gaseous state. Her insides had putrefied and there was insufficient skin to suture her back, so they put a blob of fat on her to suture. The surgeon who did it was a genius (but he left the country shortly after that. Brain drain. He was Malaysian.)
Joanie made it through that night. And I camped beside her after work each day, encouraging her to get well. After four days, Joanie was declared fit to be discharged. I brought her back, nursed her back to health but soon after she escaped from our house. The vet said if she escaped, it means she felt fit enough. We did see Joanie for a few times in the neighbourhood and no more after that.

So, hope you’d excuse me for being a little anxious for Samantha. I’ve only managed Pole and Minnie’s deliveries. For Minnie, we missed it because we went out for taiji and she’d delivered safely on her own!
