Some remedies for diarrhoea, constipation and mild vomiting

I’ve taken the liberty of compiling some remedies we’ve used over the years for diarrhoea (or loose stools), constipation and mild vomiting for our cats. If you have more supplements, do please feel free to leave a comment so that I can add on to this list.

Disclaimer: The purpose of this list is just to share experiential knowledge and in NO WAY does it constitute any veterinary advice and it certainly does not replace the professional advice from a vet.

With age and an aging memory, I also need this list for myself!!  I just realised I’ve forgotten to put Indy on Saccharomyces Boulardii this time. So forgetful!!

Here it is:

Diarrhoea or loose stools
1. Switch to a bland diet like steamed chicken breast meat in small amounts throughout the day
2. Steamed pumpkin
3. Saccharomyces Boulardii (probiotics) like Bioflor (from the pharmacy)
4. Probiotics like ProMax (Vetplus) or Max Pro GI (PetDiatrics). Feline Gut Soothe from Adored Beast works wonders too. Postbiotics might help too.
5. Kaolin Pectin
6. Deworm
7. Slippery Elm Bark
8. Fibre like Pro-Fibre
9. Switch to a novel protein, like rabbit (in case the cause is a food allergy)
10. Ensure ample water for hydration
11. See vet, may be due to infection, antibiotics needed (eg Metrogyl)

This is a very good guide: https://www.foodfurlife.com/my-cat-has-diarrhea—what-do-i-do.html#/

Constipation
1. Lactulose
2. Steamed pumpkin
3. Coconut fibre like Furcoco
4. Virgin coconut oil or olive oil
5. Ensure ample water for hydration
6. See vet
7. Enemas by vet or baby enemas at home (under vet’s instructions)
8. Manual evacuation of faeces by vet
9. Cisapride – last resort (prescribed by vet)

Mild Vomiting
1. Famotidine for gastric issues (prescribed by vet)
2. Omeprazole for gastric issues (prescribed by vet)
3. If due to hairball, try virgin coconut oil
4. Let them eat grass!
5. Switch to bland diet like steamed chicken breast meat
6. See vet if unsure, or cat shows signs of weakness and lethargy
7. To kickstart appetite after recovery, switch to a new unfamiliar flavour or new type of food (the food eaten prior to vomiting may lead to nausea due to the memory of its scent)
