Ever since finishing Promax and even though I started him on Fera Organics, Indy’s poop has been soft, but at least it’s well-formed. It is no longer “oatmeal”.
I think after finishing Fero Organics, I might try him on Adored Beasts’ Love Bugs. This would be another “safe” and basic probiotic. Adored Beasts’ bestseller for loose stools is Feline Gut Soothe but this contains L-Glutamine and it isn’t suitable for CKD cats as it would raise the creatinine level. Please scroll for latest information – it IS suitable.
However, the information from the internet is conflicting with regard to L-Glutamine and CKD.
On the one hand…
L glutamine and kidney disease
This study demonstrates that the administration of glutamine protects the kidney from IRI-induced AKI in vivo. Consistently, we found that the extent of renal tubular cell damage and apoptosis as well as neutrophil recruitment are significantly reduced after glutamine administration in vitro.
Glutamine increases renal blood flow, creatinine clearance, and the levels of potassium, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and urine osmolality, while reducing the relative excretion of sodium, potassium, urinary sodium, and plasma blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels.
Is L-glutamine good for kidneys?
These findings demonstrate that glutamine administration ameliorates both the global and local immune cell activation in renal IRI in vivo, thereby protecting tissue integrity and maintaining kidney function.
On the other hand…
Who should avoid L glutamine?
People with kidney disease, liver disease, or Reye syndrome (a rare, sometimes fatal disease of childhood that is generally associated with aspirin use) should not take glutamine.
Updates on 10th Sep 2024: Adored Beast contacted me to inform me that Feline Gut Soothe IS highly recommended for CKD. Their founder and formulator, Ms Julie Anne Lee DCH RCSHom, confirmed that they recommend their Feline (and Canine) Gut Soothe specifically for animals suffering chronic kidney disease for its amazing anti-inflammatory properties, as well as supporting a more robust functioning immune system.
