Cindy’s Recipe Original canned food as a snack for our cats

We have been using Cindy’s Recipe Original canned food with broth for our cats for many years now, but only as a snack/treat as it is a complementary food. Not as their staple food. Their staple is still raw food.

Recently, with Indy getting CKD and now, Tabs and Ginger at the early stages and also with Cow Mau getting old, I needed to find out the amount of phosphorus in the canned food.

The amount of protein is already clearly stated in the can.

Tabs, Cow Mau and even Indy love the Cindy’s baby food (which is actually the Cindy’s pureed food with goat milk), so I definitely had to find out the phosphorus content in both flavours, Tender Chicken and Tuna. I contacted the importer and I got the answers today!

This is the baby food for special needs (it is totally pureed). Protein (as stated on the can) is only 8% and the phosphorus content is 0.001%, so from my understanding, it should be safe for CKD and geriatric cats. Yay for Tabs, Cow Mau and Indy! They love this food as a snack.

With Cow Mau’s mouth pain, this food is the best for him because it is pureed. He actually eats many cans a day. But now, after the Solensia injection, he can already eat some of the Cindy’s Original with the meat (not pureed).

These are some of the flavours of the Cindy’s Original with Broth that I use. The protein content is 15% and phosphorus is between 0.001% and 0.005% (should be very safe as a snack). The phosphorus content is not stated on the can, though, as they are not required to list it. I found out from the importer. Apparently, the export team has the data because Hong Kong and Taiwan consumers want to know.

As far as I know from one of our vets, the phosphorus content in food for CKD cats should not be more than 0.6%, so we are safe.

So where is phosphorus found in meat?

Where is phosphorus found?
In humans, phosphorus makes up about 1% to 1.4% of fat-free mass. Of this amount, 85% is in bones and teeth, and the other 15% is distributed throughout the blood and soft tissues.

I suppose we can use this information to estimate for animals too. 85% in bone and teeth and 15% in the meat and soft tissues.

As far as I know, Cindy’s Original canned food in Broth only contains meat (no bone at all) and broth. Nothing else is added, I’m told. The broth is carbohydrates (modified tapioca starch). But it is either broth or jelly which is carrageenan. I have only used the broth variety.

I’m going to find out about Back2Nature canned food next.

Meanwhile, I have also written to Royal Canin but the reply never came.
