For a few weeks now, the Blondies (yes, all females) have been spraying urine around the house whenever they come out to play.
Before I go any further, I would just like to say this: Neutering stops the aggression and competitive behaviours due to mating, but it might not stop the territorial behaviour or even the marking. This has always been the case with our cats, somehow. I don’t know why, but it always happens with our cats. Almost every single cat we have had (and still have) will end up with alpha behaviour. Again, I don’t know why. My husband insists it is because I sayang them too much, so they “have face” (that’s a literal translation from Chinese, ie. “ada muka”).
Now, we have three new alphas – the Blondies, ie. Kai, Akira and Indra. Yes, the all-female team of new alphas. And before anyone tells me I should have got them neutered “earlier”, they were all neutered at the age of 4 months and 20 days. How much earlier should I have got them spayed, please tell me. Our vet says they were ready to be spayed at that age, so I got them fixed at that time.
And now, at 1 year old, they just started marking (spraying urine).
The same goes with Cow Mau, Bunny and everyone else who has/had a tendency to mark. It all happened AFTER they were neutered.
The reason is simple: We are a multi-cat household so there is bound to be some territorial behaviour. It’s just a cat’s natural tendency. Neutering may or may not solve this issue. If it does solve it, you are really lucky. If it doesn’t, that’s normal.
Now, as you know, the Monsters get to go over the Bunny’s Place to play and eat grass every now and then.
But Kai decided this has to stop this morning.
Kai??
Yes, Kai. She’s the new alpha in Bunny’s Place.
I heard her growling at Stargate 2 this morning. And when I found her, she was standing on her two hind legs lion-dance style.
Who are on the other side?
Cow Mau was on hand to help her. He always is.
On the other side of the gate were Smurfy, Lynx, Rey, Robin and yes, Ginger, which means everyone except Minnie.
Kai: No, you may not come over. This is OUR territory. You stay in yours.
Ginger was actually there, but right at the gate so that in case I open the gate, he could rush in.
Clever, eh?
The Blondies are asserting their rights now and for all you know, they will be the new defenders in Bunny’s Place, with Cow Mau and Indy taking an advisory role.
P.S. Riley and Tabs are not alpha cats. It boils down to personality AND environment, and perhaps other reasons that we will never know of.
